It is evident in the current state of the automotive industry that autonomous is the way to go. Sooner rather than later, we will be seeing more and more technological advances that allow mobility to move to this next level. BMW has been openly discussing their game plan: 5 different levels of autonomy, each one higher than the other until the ultimate state is reached. There is no question that BMW engineers will make autonomous driving possible, but for customers, one important question remains: will it be fun to drive? Well, BMW is committed to making it that way.
A big part of BMW’s success throughout the years is its ability to create ultimate driving machines. These machines have one important trait: they are fun to drive. They make the car one with the driver which creates a harmonious and unbelievably desirable experience that’s hard to forget. Autonomous driving takes away this experience of actually driving the car and enthusiasts are a little bit concerned that they will no longer be fun.
In an interview with Car Advice at the launch of the new 8 Series Concept in Italy, Robertson said that “[BMWs] will still have an excitement for driving†even as autonomous cars. The engineers are well rooted with what BMW stands for and will continually be committed to that.
We don’t know yet what BMW means when they say that their autonomous cars will be fun to drive. However, we are hoping for the best!
