The 2025 BMW M5 Touring brings practicality to the performance wagon segment, offering much more cargo space than its specifications suggest. The disparity arises due to different measurement standards used in Europe and the United States, creating confusion about its true capacity. At a BMW TestFest event in Spartanburg, South Carolina, comparisons between the M5 Touring and the sedan revealed a misleading story told by the official figures. While the sedan’s trunk is listed at 18.7 cubic feet, the wagon is shown at only 17.7 cubic feet. However, the Touring’s design offers significantly greater usability in real-world use thanks to its open space extending to the roof.
John Kelly, BMW’s Product Manager for Luxury Class and M Models shed light on the issue, explaining that European regulations only allow automakers to measure cargo space below the windows, leaving the area above unaccounted for. When measured to the roof, the Touring’s cargo area easily outpaces that of the sedan and rivals that of SUVs like the BMW X5 M.
The M5 Touring’s rear seats add another layer of flexibility. With the seats up, the car holds 27.2 cubic feet of space, and when folded, it expands to a massive 67 cubic feet. These figures make it competitive with other luxury wagons, such as the Audi RS6 Avant, underscoring its value as a versatile, family-friendly vehicle.
