It was 1983 when Nelson Piquet became the first driver in the history of Formula One to snag the world championship title in a racing car powered by a turbo engine. The engine was a Brabham BMW BT52. Check out how it was made, on this video:

The legendary Brabham BMW BT52 was developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH during the time of then Technical Director, Paul Rosche. The end result was a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with valves, a turbocharger and was first to use Digital Motor Electronics.

The power went up to 1,400 hp. It was first deployed in a Formula One race at the start of the 1982 season where it ended up winning.
