The compact powerhouse from BMW M just grew more capable. For the first time, the BMW M2 will be offered with the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system, bringing greater traction, quicker acceleration and improved stability without diluting the car’s character. This new BMW M2 with M xDrive lets drivers savour that unmistakable M feeling across every season and in almost any road condition. Market launch is set for late summer 2026, opening a fresh chapter for one of the brand’s most beloved sports cars.
At the heart of the package, M xDrive splits power from the 353kW/480hp straight-six engine, fitted with BMW M TwinPower Turbo technology, between the front and rear axles to suit the moment. Working alongside it, the Active M Differential distributes drive variably between the rear wheels, maximising grip while preserving the dynamics expected of a rear-driven machine. The system keeps a clear rear-wheel bias, sending power solely to the back wheels in normal driving and only calling on the front pair when the rears can no longer put it all down.
Drivers can tailor the setup through the M Setup menu, adjusting how the all-wheel-drive system behaves to match conditions and personal taste. Among the choices is a pure 2WD mode with stability control switched off, channelling torque to the rear wheels alone for a remarkably undiluted driving experience. A model-specific control unit with integrated wheel slip limitation reacts with lightning speed, compensating for any speed differences between axles without involving the central stability management, which deepens that signature sense of composure when the pace climbs.
Under the bonnet sits clever new engine technology with roots in motorsport. The 3.0-litre straight-six adopts BMW M Ignite, a newly patented pre-chamber combustion process that meaningfully cuts fuel use under high loads while helping meet EU7 requirements. The engine retains the sharp response, linear delivery and stirring soundtrack that define M models. Track day enthusiasts stand to gain the most, since the reduced consumption under heavy loads allows more laps on the same tank. A standard M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic and M Compound brakes round out the hardware.
The numbers tell the story. The M2 with M xDrive sprints from 0 to 100km/h in 3.7 seconds, three tenths quicker than its rear-driven sibling, and reaches 200km/h in 12.8 seconds. Top speed is limited to 250km/h, rising to 285km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package. Buyers also gain fresh visual flair, including BMW Individual Borusan Turkish Blue offered on an M2 for the first time. Built at BMW Group Plant San Luis Potosí in Mexico from August 2026, this latest M2 elevates the compact M formula to a new level of all-weather ability.
