Hockney’s BMW Art Car Rolls Into Doha For Art Basel Qatar

BMW is marking the inaugural Art Basel Qatar with a standout arrival from its celebrated Art Car line-up: David Hockney’s 1995 BMW Art Car. Shown in Doha as part of the BMW Art Car World Tour, it places a legendary piece of automotive design culture right at the heart of a new chapter for the fair, linking contemporary art with the brand’s long-running interest in innovation and mobility.

Hockney’s approach turns conventional coachwork on its head. Rather than treating the body panels as a simple surface, he makes the car feel transparent, like a technical cutaway brought to life. The design plays with the idea of seeing beneath the paint—suggesting the cabin, the occupants and the machinery within—so the vehicle reads less like a static exhibit and more like a machine caught mid-motion.

The car itself is based on a BMW 850 CSi, and Hockney’s “inside-out” treatment highlights the anatomy of the vehicle with bold colour and crisp graphic shapes. You can pick out the driver’s outline on the door, stylised engine elements across the bonnet, and broad green fields that hint at landscape and speed. It’s an imaginative spin on what automotive livery can be when an artist treats a car as a full-scale canvas rather than a showroom product.

Alongside the Art Car display, BMW is hosting a dedicated lounge space during the fair’s opening hours, giving visitors a closer look at the wider Art Car Collection through curated content and miniature displays. An opening reception adds to the sense of occasion, with speakers reflecting on how design, technology and culture continue to overlap when a vehicle becomes part sculpture, part statement piece.

Hockney’s Art Car also underlines what makes the wider collection so enduring: each entry captures a different way of looking at the automobile, from pure colour and abstraction to concept-led graphics. With the World Tour continuing its global run, this Doha stop positions the Art Car not as a museum relic, but as a roaming icon—proof that sometimes the most memorable bodywork isn’t about aerodynamics or performance figures, but the story painted across the panels.
