Is BMW developing a mid-engined Z7 Supercar?

BMW’s 100th anniversary is in 2016 and they can brew up something big and unexpected for this occasion. Rumors of a BMW supercar have been around in the past years. The latest report from Car Magazine discusses the BMW-Toyota collaboration for a new range mid-engined sports car to compete with the Porsche 911.

The same publication says that the project name is Silk Road 2 which includes the proposed BMW Z7 and Lexus ZC/ZRdue around 2017. CAR says the sports cars are already under development and will break with tradition in more ways than one.

If true, this will be the first mid-engined mainstream two-seater for both brands – as well as the first plug-in hybrid sports car with a six-cylinder engine.

Common components for the two cars are believed to include a twin-turbo engine, a super-swift seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission, a 3.0 liter six-cylinder engine, supplementary 150bhp e-motor and performance batteries packaged between the seats.

The aggregate power output would be in the 400 to 500bhp bracket for a kerbweight under 1650 kilos, and very fast.

Rumor has it that BMW pushed for this car and it will most likely be developed in Munich.
