The BMW X5 is receiving a facelift for the 2024 model year. This brings a host of changes and improvements to the popular SUV. While we won’t get a look at the final version for a few more months, here’s what we know about the upcoming X5. Keep in mind that the model year for the X5 may vary depending on the market. This involves some regions referring to it as a 2023 model.
In the United States, there will be three different engine options for the 2024 BMW X5. This new SUV is offered in sDrive (rear-wheel drive) and xDrive (all-wheel drive) configurations. The BMW X5 xDrive40i trim will continue to be the standard X5. It will also come with the same turbocharged B58 inline six-cylinder engine. Output climbs substantially — expect similar values to the current X7 xDrive40i’s 375 horsepower and 398 pound-feet of torque.
The upcoming BMW X5 xDrive45e hybrid model is receiving a significant boost in power. This brings a combined output of 480 horsepower from its turbocharged six-cylinder engine and electric motor. While the electric range of the new model is not yet known, it is expected to improve over the current X5’s range of 31 miles. The new model will also feature a new badge, the X5 xDrive50e, indicating its upgraded performance.
Following the changes made to the X7, the top-of-the-line BMW X5 M50i will return as the 2024 BMW X5 M60i. Expect the S68 M engine, which produces 530 horsepower like it does in the X7 M60i, to be an actual M engine. The 48-volt mild hybrid system built into the new S68 engine may result in better fuel economy, though most owners won’t notice much of a change from the engine in the current X5 M50i.
Volvo and Lexus offer similar vehicles at lower prices but with sacrifices in styling, handling, and quality. Higher-end vehicles like the Porsche Cayenne have a higher price tag but offer added usability and prestige. A PHEV Mercedes-Benz GLE is rumoured to be coming out in 2024, and it is expected to be the biggest competitor to the X5. It offers similar features and power output, and pricing is expected to be similar to the X5.
