Everybody is excited for what’s next in the BMW i8 story. Until now, BMW has not yet decided on a successor to the first generation BMW i8 hybrid sportscar. Sources say that the second-generation i8 project is still being deliberated on, but no one’s to tell if it will given the greenlight in the future.
If this becomes a reality, there are two practical options for the drivetrain: one would be the current tech with a plug-in hybrid architecture but with improved power delivery and electric range, while the alternative would be a fully electric i8 which could take on the highly-touted hypercars.
The design language is expected to be different as it is futuristic. BMW will make sure it stands out among the other BMWs, thanks to the work by i subdivision’s design chief – Domagoj Dukec.
The second-generation would need to fill in on some pretty bug shoes. When the BMW i8 first debuted in 2014, it was a revolutionary design. It was the first mid-engine car to offer a carbon fiber passenger cell and a hybrid powertrain at anywhere near its price point. Until now, it is still a great car to look at and to own.
Approval will likely be after 2020 as a part of the 25 electric cars strategy by BMW.
