The BMW 8 Series Is Gone For Good And Alpina Takes The Baton

The BMW 8 Series has quietly slipped away, and nothing is queuing up to replace it. Production of the second-generation car stopped in April 2026. Anyone holding out for a Neue Klasse reboot should probably stop holding their breath. A BMW executive has told Automotive News that shifting the big coupe onto the new architecture is “not feasible”. That leaves Munich without a flagship grand tourer on the books.

The reasoning is engineering, not sentiment. The G15 coupe arrived in 2018 riding on CLAR, with the G14 convertible and G16 Gran Coupe following behind. CLAR still carries a huge slice of the current range. What it was never conceived around is the high-voltage wiring and software-led systems that define Neue Klasse. Retrofitting all of that would mean starting from a blank sheet. For a low-volume GT, the sums do not add up. The XM’s successor is reportedly wrestling with the same maths.

Alpina was floated as a fix, and that plan was apparently shelved. Yet one concept refuses to let the idea die. The Vision BMW Alpina broke cover at the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este in May 2026, then reappeared at Monterey Car Week. It is long, low and unmistakably a grand tourer. A shark-nose snout leads the way, a V8 sits under the bonnet, and the cabin is trimmed in leather, metal and crystal. Squint and the old 8 Series Gran Coupe is right there in the proportions.

Officially, it is a one-off study and nothing more. BMW has not committed it to production. Even so, the timing is hard to ignore. Alpina became a standalone ultra-luxury brand within BMW Group on 1 January 2026. Its cars are built in BMW plants and slot above the regular range. The first model of this new chapter is tipped to be a V8-powered saloon based on the 7 Series, landing around 2027.

If that car goes down well, a big Alpina GT drawn from the Vision concept becomes the obvious next move. It tidies up BMW’s problem rather neatly, too. Instead of pouring engineering hours into forcing a niche coupe onto a platform that resists it, Munich can hand the flagship coupe job to a brand built for precisely that sort of machine. The 8 Series badge looks finished. The space it filled probably is not.
