BMW Group is rolling out demonstration fleets that run exclusively on HVO100 renewable diesel, showing a practical route to lower fleet emissions without changing vehicle hardware. Debuted at Fleet Europe Days in Luxembourg, the approach matches refuelling data from each BMW diesel with the operator’s payment records, so every litre of HVO100 is traceable. For managers, that means a clear audit trail; for drivers, it’s business as usual at the pump—just with a cleaner drop.

The technical backbone is simple and robust. All participating BMW diesels are set up for HVO100, and the back-end system consolidates verified fuel transactions to prove an “HVO100 only” duty cycle. It’s aimed squarely at fleets that cover long distances, tow heavy loads or need quick refuelling, where battery-electric isn’t always the right tool. Early agreements with major operators in Germany and Italy, alongside BMW’s internal test fleet, will generate usage data to refine rollout.
BMW has already put its shoulder behind the idea in production. Since January 2025, every diesel model built in Germany receives an initial fill of HVO100 at the factory, using Neste MY Renewable Diesel at Munich, Dingolfing, Regensburg and Leipzig. The fuel’s well-to-wheel CO2e reduction of up to 90 per cent versus fossil diesel underlines the point: decarbonisation can start before the first customer mile is driven.
Policy will help decide the pace. BMW is pressing for rapid, ambitious implementation of RED III across Europe, including national quotas that drive down greenhouse-gas intensity from fuels. The company’s stance is technology-open—battery electric, plug-in hybrid, hydrogen fuel cell and efficient combustion all have roles—so enabling certified renewable fuels alongside EV adoption gives fleets real-world levers to pull today.
For operators, the appeal is straightforward: verified low-carbon fuel, unchanged vehicle performance and credible reporting without extra admin. For BMW’s diesel line-up, it’s a way to cut emissions immediately while broader electrification scales up—proof that cleaner mileage doesn’t always require a new powertrain.
