The BMW Z4 may be living on borrowed time, yet that hasn’t stopped designers from envisioning what it might look like if the roadster embraced the Neue Klasse philosophy. Italian concept artist Luca Serafini has shared renderings that reimagine the Z4 with the brand’s latest design cues, proving that the sharper lines and bold surfaces of BMW’s new era would suit the drop-top remarkably well.

Sadly, the reality is different. Despite its loyal following, particularly among enthusiasts who praise the manual gearbox option, the Z4 remains one of BMW’s weakest performers in the showroom. Even with the recent Handschalter package giving purists something to cheer about, sales numbers have not justified investment in a successor. The car has been granted a short reprieve until mid-next year, but its fate appears sealed.
The Neue Klasse platform, meanwhile, is set to redefine BMW’s future. Following its debut on the iX3, the architecture will underpin a host of upcoming models, including the next-generation 3 Series and X5. Between now and 2027, more than 40 new vehicles are scheduled to join the line-up, each blending advanced technology with a design language the company claims is “more BMW than ever.”
There are whispers of an i4 coupé and convertible arriving before the decade’s end, both likely to ride on the Neue Klasse base. Should the convertible reach production, it may become the spiritual heir to the Z4, offering drivers an open-air experience shaped by the brand’s future-focused identity. Until then, the Z4’s imagined Neue Klasse form will remain a tantalising vision of what might have been.
