BMW X3 Retains Edge Over New Audi Q5 in SUV Showdown

Audi’s latest Q5 arrives with updated design, new technology and the expectation of continuing its success as the brand’s best-selling model. Facing it is the BMW X3, widely regarded as the benchmark in the premium mid-size SUV segment.

On paper, the two are evenly matched. Both use 2.0-litre mild-hybrid diesel engines with similar power and torque outputs, sit just over 4.7 metres long, and feature large high-resolution touchscreens. But behind the wheel, distinctions appear. The Audi offers steering that feels natural and suspension that controls body movements well, yet it can crash over potholes. The BMW, by contrast, feels more agile, smoother over varied roads, and delivers its powertrain with greater polish, making it more engaging to drive.

Practicality also tips slightly in BMW’s favour. Its boot is more accommodating, and folding the rear seats liberates greater space than the Audi. Both cabins are comfortable and refined, with generous headroom, though the Q5’s rear seats offer a touch more thigh support. Safety standards are strong for both, but the X3 gives buyers more flexibility in equipping driver-assistance features.

While the new Q5 is a well-rounded SUV that brings style, comfort and solid performance, it doesn’t represent a huge leap forward. The BMW X3, however, continues to blend sharp handling, practicality and refinement better than its rival, securing its position as the stronger all-round choice.
