The BMW iX3 arrived as the trailblazer for the firm’s Neue Klasse electric era, and it set a high bar. Judges have already showered it with silverware, naming it a class leader among premium electric SUVs. Now two fresh rivals want a piece of the action. The Mercedes GLC Electric and the Volvo EX60 have turned up to test whether the iX3 can hold its ground.
On paper, the iX3 comes loaded for the fight. The 50 xDrive version carries the largest battery of the trio and quotes the longest range. In everyday driving it returned the best efficiency alongside the Mercedes, and covered close to 400 miles between charges. It sprints from rest to 62mph in well under five seconds. A five-star safety rating and the windscreen-wide Panoramic Vision display round off a strong hand.
The Mercedes plays a different game. The GLC leans on comfort, hushed refinement and a theatrical cabin lit by shifting colours. Its brake-by-wire system smooths progress, and a badge-operated bonnet hides a generous storage well up front. The Volvo EX60 splits the difference. It rides comfortably, looks sharp and packs plenty of punch, though its quick steering feels slightly at odds with its bulk. Clever touches include winged door tabs in place of handles.
When the numbers were tallied, the iX3 stayed ahead. Its blend of pace, efficiency and practicality proved hard to match, even if the ride errs on the firm side. The EX60 took the runner-up spot on the strength of its range and cabin. The GLC settled for third, yet the margins were slim. All three make a compelling case for going electric, but the BMW remains the one to beat.
