The original BMW M2 Competition has just been handed a striking new lease of life courtesy of Alpha-N, the German tuning specialist that has stepped in to offer the kind of aggressive carbon upgrade programme that BMW’s own M Performance division never quite got around to developing. While the second-generation M2 may comfortably trump its predecessor on raw performance figures, many enthusiasts still argue that the F87 original holds the edge when it comes to pure design character. Now, with this fresh package on the table, existing M2 Competition owners have a compelling new route to sharpen the visual appeal of their machines without being tied to the official factory catalogue.
The programme has been christened the Alpha-N Corse, and it centres on an extensive suite of carbon fibre components engineered with track duty in mind while remaining perfectly usable on public roads. The upgrades have clearly been developed with a discerning driver in mind, striking a balance between motorsport-inspired aggression and everyday practicality that many aftermarket kits fail to achieve. Alpha-N had already been busy producing parts for the current-generation M2 before steering its attention back to the outgoing F87 Competition, a model that continues to enjoy a devoted following among purists.
At the front end, the makeover kicks off with a razor-sharp new splitter and revised grille inserts finished in matte carbon, lending the M2 a far meaner stance on the road. A full carbon bonnet has also been developed, incorporating prominent air extraction vents designed to help keep engine-bay temperatures in check during hard driving. Flanking the bonnet are carbon louvres fitted above the front wheel arches, a detail that draws clear inspiration from the Porsche 911 GT3 RS and adds genuine motorsport flavour to the coupe’s silhouette. The effect is striking and immediately marks the modified car out from standard M2 Competitions seen on the road.
Moving further down the body, side skirt extensions neatly tie the front-end drama into the rear of the coupe, where buyers can specify one of two different swan neck style rear wings, depending on how committed to track work they happen to be. For those wanting the mechanical setup to keep pace with the visual statement, Alpha-N also offers Ohlins TTX coilovers featuring independent rebound and compression adjustment, transforming how the M2 Competition behaves when pushed hard through corners or across undulating back roads. It is a thoughtful pairing of bodywork and chassis hardware that allows owners to tailor the overall character of their car to their driving style.
Availability is refreshingly broad, too. Although Alpha-N operates out of Germany, owners across the United States, Canada and South America can all place orders through IND Distribution, making the programme genuinely accessible to the wider F87 M2 Competition community. It is a welcome development for enthusiasts who have long felt that BMW itself left some of the most dramatic styling possibilities for the original M2 Competition sitting firmly on the table, and Alpha-N now appears ready to pick up exactly where the factory chose not to venture.
