The New BMW X7 is Not an X5 with Extended Wheelbase

Last month at the New York Auto Show, Ian Robertson, BMW head of sales and marketing, said that BMW X7 will come with so many adjustments that it will basically be a new car.

Robertson stated for Autocar: “If you put the X5 and X7 next to each other, the resemblance is small in terms of wheelbase and so on. We’re not going to just extend the wheelbase; it’s a completely new panel cell.”

The engineers will use the CLAR platform to build this SUV, which means that it will feature high-strength steel, aluminium, and carbon fiber. Basically, the vehicle will be stronger but will shed some kg – estimated between 50 and 100.

As Robertson said, two versions of BMW X7 will be available – a regular one and a luxurious one.

The planned avg annual production is 45,000 units, and the basic version without additional features will cost around $150,000.
