BMW iX xDrive45 M Sport Blends Family Practicality With Driver Appeal

Four years on from its debut, BMW’s electric flagship SUV has received a comprehensive update. The BMW iX still divides opinion with its bold styling, but under the skin, it has gained a bigger 94.8kWh battery in this xDrive45 version, offering a realistic range close to 367 miles. Subtle exterior tweaks include slimmer LED driving lights and the illuminated ‘Iconic Glow’ kidney grille, while M Sport trim adds dark exterior details, 21-inch alloys, and sports seats.

From behind the wheel, the iX remains faithful to BMW’s reputation for driving enjoyment. Despite its size, the chassis feels composed, and the 0–62mph time of just over five seconds is matched by responsive handling. The ride has a firmer edge than earlier models, but comfort remains high, aided by excellent refinement. Forward visibility is boosted by the low-set dashboard and wide windscreen, while rear passengers benefit from a flat floor and an expansive panoramic glass roof that can switch from clear to opaque at the touch of a button.

Inside, the blend of quality materials, innovative features, and user-friendly tech makes the cabin an inviting space. The curved widescreen display, clear head-up projection, and rotary iDrive controller ensure intuitive operation, while the voice-controlled assistant adapts to driver habits. Thoughtful touches, such as easily disabling the mandatory speed warning chime with a steering wheel button press, add to the ease of daily use.

After a week of Steve Fowler’s driving the iX, it has proved to be a capable and enjoyable companion. It’s quick, handles with precision, and even delivers a distinctive soundtrack created by composer Hans Zimmer. With family trips ahead, it looks set to continue balancing long-distance comfort with genuine driver engagement — something few electric SUVs manage to achieve.
