BMW Speedtop Sells Out As 70 Build Slots Disappear Worldwide

The BMW Speedtop has already secured instant collector status: every one of the 70 planned shooting-brake conversions was snapped up within moments of its Villa d’Este debut, leaving would-be buyers scrambling. BMW’s chief executive, Oliver Zipse, confirmed the immediate sell-out during the firm’s half-year earnings call, noting unprecedented demand for the new halo project.

Conceived as a lavish reinterpretation of the 8 Series coupé, the Speedtop swaps the standard roofline for a hand-finished, wagon-style profile that blends long-distance grandeur with purposeful stance. Bespoke body panels, an extended hatch, and tailored aero detailing set it apart, while the small-series build process promises coach-built precision more usually reserved for one-off concepts.

Power comes from the most potent V8 currently found in BMW’s line-up: a 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged unit likely lifted from the M8, sending an estimated 617 horsepower to all four wheels through an eight-speed automatic and performance-tuned xDrive system. The chassis retains adaptive dampers and active differential control, ensuring confident balance whether cruising autobahns or carving mountain switchbacks.

The Speedtop follows last year’s Skytop—another Villa d’Este star based on the 8 Series, limited to just 50 examples—and signals a growing appetite for ultra-low-volume specials from Munich. BMW’s dedicated small-series division has hinted at future projects under the M banner, suggesting even more extreme creations could be on the horizon.

For now, the entire Speedtop allocation is spoken for, and sightings are likely to be restricted to concours lawns and high-profile motoring events. Still, its lightning-fast sell-out highlights the pull of limited-run individuality—and underlines BMW’s ability to turn design studies into road-ready reality with striking pace.
