[VIDEO] BMW M4 and M5 Challenge Bugatti Chiron Super Short

While the performance gap between BMW and Bugatti might appear daunting, these are no ordinary Bimmers. Carwow orchestrated an epic showdown featuring the high-powered Bugatti Chiron Super Sport and heavily tweaked M4 (G82) and M5 CS (F90) models.

The M division’s inline-six twin-turbo 3.0-litre engine now packs 1,000 horsepower and 1,000 Newton meters (738 pound-feet) of torque. The xDrive variant sends power to both front and rear axles. This is crucial for this highly modified, high-power model. It eliminates potential traction problems when channelling four-digit horsepower solely through the rear wheels.

The M5 CS, on the other hand, boasts a larger V8 engine, the twin-turbo 4.4-litre S63. This engine cranks out an impressive 1,200 Nm (886 lb-ft) and 1,000 horsepower. It comes standard with AWD, a feature shared with all M5s from the previous generation. Also, it offers a selectable RWD mode. However, avoiding it when taking on a Bugatti in a drag race is advisable.

In stark contrast, the Chiron Super Sport houses a mammoth W16 engine. This is an 8.0-litre quad-turbo behemoth generating an astonishing 1,600 horsepower and 1,600 Nm (1,180 lb-ft) of torque. At first glance, it may seem that the BMWs stand no chance against the Bugatti’s overwhelming power. However, the acceleration tests reveal an intriguing twist. The M4 and M5 come equipped with torque-converter automatic gearboxes. The Bimmers display swifter off-the-line performance compared to the hypercar’s dual-clutch automatic. As a result, it tends to be more leisurely in its response.

In this exhilarating contest, the Molsheim-crafted dream car made a remarkable comeback. It narrowly beats the M5 CS to secure victory in the standing quarter-mile race. During the second rolling race, spanning from 50 mph to the half-mile mark, the M4 surged ahead and crossed the finish line first. Meanwhile, the Chiron Super Sport closely trails. In the subsequent races, the Chiron won, though by a narrow margin.

The climactic moment arrived when all three vehicles faced off in a brake test, starting from 100 mph (161 km/h), to determine which could come to a halt the fastest. Among the BMWs, it was the M4 that proved to be the swiftest in coming to a complete stop.
