The 2025 BMW X6 M returns to the arena as the archetype of the coupe-roof performance SUV, a shape BMW helped popularise and has steadily refined. Fresh from last year’s Life Cycle Impulse, this model adds convenience tech such as Digital Key Plus while keeping the visual aggression and stance that separate it from the squarer X5. It remains the boldest expression of BMW’s “Sports Activity Coupé” idea—lower, tauter and built to turn heads without losing everyday usability.

Under the bonnet sits BMW’s S68 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system integrated into the transmission. The set-up smooths stop-start events, sharpens low-rev response and feeds a steady surge through the eight-speed M Steptronic. M xDrive and an Active M differential work quietly in the background, shuffling torque so the rear axle does the heavy lifting on exit while keeping things tidy when surfaces turn patchy. The result is relentless in-gear pace and a powertrain that feels cohesive whether you are threading city traffic or joining a fast A-road.
The chassis tune is unapologetically firm. Even in its softest damper mode, you feel the road’s texture, but the payoff arrives the moment it starts to flow: body control is locked down, the nose places accurately, and the rear rotates progressively without drama. Heavier steering loads up cleanly, and the brakes deliver a reassuring bite after a measured initial stroke, so you can lean on the front end and drive with precision. Click into the more focused settings and the X6 M tightens further; it is not cushy, yet it stays composed and confidence-inspiring when the pace rises.

Inside, the curved display blends a 12.3-inch cluster with a 14.9-inch touchscreen running Operating System 8. The cabin looks modern and purposefully pared back, though the move to screen-based climate controls won’t suit everyone. The iDrive controller remains, which helps on the move, and the ambient light bar, carbon-trimmed paddles and sports seats deliver a proper M ambience. As ever with the coupe roof, rear headroom and load space trail the X5 M, but there is still ample room for daily duties, and the driving position is spot on.
Measured against a field of ever-faster super-SUVs, the X6 M answers with balance and character rather than headline bragging rights. It is brutally effective point-to-point, yet refined enough to take the long way home; complex beneath the skin, yet straightforward to drive hard. If you want a performance SUV with genuine road manners and a distinct identity, this remains one of BMW M’s most convincing statements.
