The BMW iX takes centre stage here, and from week one of Steve Fowler’s use, it proved why it’s still a benchmark among electric SUVs. A bolder light signature and that illuminated kidney outline give it presence, but it’s the engineering that makes the case: slick aerodynamics, tight body control and crisp steering give the big BMW the kind of road manners that make long trips feel easy.

Our iX xDrive45 paired dual-motor traction with the uprated 94.8kWh battery, returning a genuine 3.3 miles/kWh over thousands of miles. Keep to A-roads and mixed routes, and the claimed 367-mile range feels within reach; on motorways, it remains efficient and composed, helped by well-judged regen and smooth one-pedal driving. The chassis feels securely tied down without being harsh, and the cabin stays serenely quiet at speed.
Performance is delivered with a clean, linear shove that makes overtakes simple and slip-roads effortless; the 0–62mph time of 5.1 seconds feels entirely believable. Assistance systems are among the most natural in the class: adaptive cruise holds the lane properly, reads limits, and even makes confident lane changes when you indicate. The voice assistant, polished infotainment and a strong audio system reinforce the iX’s tech brief without overwhelming the driver.

Day-to-day usability is where the iX really lands its punch. The seating is supportive on long hauls, visibility is generous through that deep screen, and the control layout—wheel buttons, stalks and the iDrive controller—has the reassuring precision BMW is known for. Not everything is perfect: the door sill can brush trousers on muddy days, and very large dogs may find headroom in the boot a touch tight, though human passengers won’t complain.
Taken as a whole, the BMW iX remains a deeply accomplished electric SUV. It blends range, refinement and engaging dynamics in a package that still feels fresh after months of hard use. If the forthcoming iX3 on the Neue Klasse platform can meaningfully raise this standard, BMW’s next chapter could reset expectations once again.
