When the BMW i8 first graced the tarmac, it presented an automotive paradox. It boasted the dramatic butterfly doors and lightweight carbon-fibre monocoque of a purebred supercar, yet it relied on a 1.5-litre three-cylinder hybrid powertrain more commonly associated with efficient city commuting. This disparity between its aggressive aesthetic and its modest combustion engine created a unique dilemma for the Bavarian engineers. To bridge the gap, they resorted to synthetic acoustic trickery, ensuring the coupe sounded as fast as it looked. However, the exact method of this sound generation has recently been exposed in spectacular fashion by a mechanic undertaking a radical engine swap.
During the disassembly process for a comprehensive B58 inline-six conversion, Trevor Elam of Bimmernetwork stumbled upon a peculiar detail hidden within the rear bumper. According to the factory service manual, the left tailpipe housed an “acoustic generator.” Upon closer inspection, it became glaringly obvious that this component was not linked to the exhaust manifold at all. Instead, it was a heavy-duty loudspeaker disguised as a mechanical outlet, wired specifically to broadcast artificial revs and synthesised bass notes to pedestrians and trailing vehicles. Rather than simply discarding the unit, Elam decided to test its true capabilities by wiring it directly to a standard stereo system.
The results were nothing short of deafening. Tuned specifically to project the low-frequency rumble of a larger powerplant, the disguised speaker handled heavy bass tracks with staggering efficiency. Operating at a blistering 110 decibels—a volume comparable to a live rock concert—the component was repurposed to blast music across the workshop for an entire day. It serves as a hilarious testament to the lengths manufacturers will go to manufacture a mechanical soul. While synthetic engine notes piped through interior cabin speakers have become standard practice across the industry, dedicating a massive external speaker solely for the benefit of bystanders is a remarkably brazen engineering choice.
Fortunately, this particular chassis will no longer need to rely on digital deceit. The ongoing project aims to shoehorn a turbocharged B58 engine into the front end, targeting an immense 700 horsepower at the rear wheels. Given that the builder already runs a drag-prepared 340xi producing upwards of 1,000 horsepower, this ambitious target seems well within reach. The genuine mechanical symphony produced by the new straight-six will easily drown out any artificial noise the hybrid system once required. It is a fitting upgrade that finally matches the theatricality of the vehicle’s striking carbon-fibre architecture.
Perhaps the most revealing aspect of this entire endeavour came from a message sent by one of the original development engineers in Germany. Reaching out to endorse the build, the insider confessed that the design team had always hoped an enthusiast would eventually install a proper, high-output engine into the bay. It appears even the creators acknowledged the compromises made during the vehicle’s conception. With the fake exhaust speaker now headed for the parts bin, this reinvented machine is poised to deliver genuine mechanical thunder, transforming a futuristic hybrid into an uncompromising tarmac predator.
