BMW to build 1 Series Sport Cross?

AutoBild, a German publication, reports that BMW may be working on a 1 Series-based crossover dubbed BMW 1 Series Sports Cross, the crossover is based on the UKL front-wheel drive platform and would sit below the second-generation BMW X1, also a front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive crossover.

No further details are known at the moment but the BMW 1 Series Sports Cross aims to extend the next generation 1 Series which will move to a front-wheel drive layout. The 2 Series Coupe and Convertible will remain on the rear-wheel drive architecture and will be using the next generation 35up RWD.

The 1 Series Sports Cross rendering shows a vehicle of the size of a 1 Series hatchback, but with a higher ride height and four doors with a coupe sloping roof line. The front follows the upcoming BMW design language, with more angular shapes and sleek headlights.

The third generation 1 Series hatch will debut in 2018, so if the BMW 1 Series Sports Cross gets the green light, it is likely after 2020.
