BMW has signed off 2025 with a commanding run at two of Germany’s most watched motoring awards. The new BMW iX3, the first Neue Klasse model, was crowned “Best Innovation” at the Golden Steering Wheel, while the BMW M5 Touring took victory in the “Upper/Luxury Class”. Over at Auto Zeitung’s long-running Auto Trophy poll, readers handed BMW nine class wins – from compact hatchbacks to luxury saloons and SUVs – and again voted the brand “World’s Best Brand”. It was a result that underlined both the breadth and strength of the current BMW line-up.

The Golden Steering Wheel has been recognising standout new cars since 1976, and this year’s field brought 72 fresh models to the DEKRA-Lausitzring for back-to-back testing. From that crowd, the battery-electric BMW iX3 made a decisive impression. As the first Neue Klasse production car, it introduces a new design language, a highly efficient drivetrain capable of up to 805 kilometres of range on the WLTP cycle, ultra-fast DC charging at up to 400 kW and remarkably low energy consumption from just 15.1 kWh/100 km. Add in the Panoramic iDrive interface, the powerful Heart of Joy central computer and BMW Dynamic Performance Control, and the jury saw enough to name it the year’s stand-out innovation.
Alongside it, the BMW M5 Touring dominated its category. The latest generation pairs a V8 engine with an integrated BMW eDrive unit to create a potent M Hybrid system with 535 kW/727 hp on tap. Yet this is not simply a straight-line missile: the estate body offers between 500 and 1,630 litres of load space, giving it day-to-day versatility that few performance cars can match. Judges rated its blend of pace, long-distance comfort, efficiency and value so highly that it achieved the highest overall score of any contender in this year’s Golden Steering Wheel tests, regardless of class.

At Auto Zeitung, it was the readers’ turn to cast judgement. Nearly 10,000 enthusiasts voted across 18 categories, choosing winners from some 400 models and brands. BMW emerged with an unparalleled nine trophies. The BMW 1 Series topped the “Best Small Cars, City Cars & Compacts” group, while the 2 Series Gran Coupé led the medium class and the new 5 Series was named best upper/luxury model. In the SUV ranks, the BMW X3 and X5 took honours in their respective price segments, while the electric BMW i5, iX1 and iX3 swept the key categories for electric saloons and SUVs. Capping it all, BMW once again secured the “World’s Best Brand” title.
Taken together, these results send a clear signal. Whether powered by petrol, hybrid systems or fully electric drivetrains, BMW’s current cars are resonating with both expert juries and keen drivers. From the trailblazing iX3 and the muscle-bound yet practical M5 Touring to the ever-popular 1, 3 and 5 Series and the X family of SUVs, the brand’s mix of innovation, dynamic ability and everyday usability is clearly hitting the mark – and the trophy cabinets in Munich are filling up fast.
