BMW Plans Purpose Built SUV To Rival Mercedes-Benz G-Class

BMW looks set to enter the rugged off-roader arena with its first dedicated model aimed squarely at the Mercedes-Benz G-Class. Industry sources suggest the project, internally known as G74, could make its debut in 2029, with production likely to take place at BMW’s Spartanburg facility in South Carolina.

The new SUV is expected to be based on an evolved version of the BMW X5 platform, but with engineering focused on serious off-road performance rather than simply adopting the styling cues of adventure vehicles. Positioned as the successor to the XM, this flagship 4×4 will mark a shift towards more specialist, go-anywhere capability within BMW’s line-up.

While BMW’s current SUV range already includes models with optional xOffroad equipment, such as the X5 with all-terrain tyres and a modest lift, the G74 is tipped to be a completely different proposition. It would be the brand’s first vehicle conceived from the ground up for challenging terrain, reflecting the growing global appetite for luxury vehicles that can handle more than just city streets.

If plans proceed, the G74 will not only expand BMW’s portfolio but also signal a new chapter in its approach to SUVs — one that blends premium engineering with genuine off-road credibility.
