Two of BMW’s most celebrated Art Cars will headline the North American leg of the BMW Art Car World Tour in 2025, with appearances at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, The Bridge in New York, and Washington D.C.’s Hirshhorn Museum. The tour marks the 50th anniversary of the collection, which has brought together world-renowned artists and iconic BMW models since 1975.

Andy Warhol’s 1979 BMW M1 Group 4 remains a highlight of the series. In under half an hour, Warhol applied vivid colours and bold textures to the car, leaving visible brushstrokes that capture the energy of his process. It went on to compete in the 24 Hours of Le Mans that same year, cementing its place in both motorsport and art history.

Julie Mehretu’s 2024 BMW M Hybrid V8 takes a different approach, layering mixed media and abstract forms to reflect themes of cultural and political change. After debuting at the Centre Pompidou in Paris and racing at Le Mans, the car will make its first North American appearance at Pebble Beach before travelling to New York for The Bridge — where it will be shown alongside a McLaren Artura GT4 wrapped by artist Mickalene Thomas — and then to the Hirshhorn Museum.
The BMW Art Car initiative began in 1975 when French racing driver Hervé Poulain invited Alexander Calder to transform a BMW 3.0 CSL. Since then, artists including Frank Stella, Roy Lichtenstein, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, and Esther Mahlangu have contributed, each bringing their own style to vehicles ranging from pure racing machines to rare production models. Selected by an independent jury, every artist is given complete creative freedom, resulting in a collection where no two cars are alike.
The anniversary tour celebrates this fusion of engineering and artistry, offering audiences a rare opportunity to see these ‘rolling sculptures’ up close before they continue their journey around the globe.
