BMW M5 Plug In Hybrid Brings Muscle and Modern Refinement

The 2025 BMW M5 is a car that wears its history proudly while embracing a future defined by electrification. Now in its seventh generation, the legendary super saloon combines a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 with an electric motor to produce an extraordinary 535kW and 1000Nm. That hybrid system also allows for around 60 kilometres of electric-only driving, lending a new layer of sophistication to its muscle-car persona.

The added technology has brought considerable weight, tipping the M5 well over two and a half tonnes. Yet, BMW’s engineers have ensured it still feels agile, with rear-wheel steering and a finely tuned differential sharpening its responses on winding roads. Straight-line acceleration remains brutal, with instant torque from the electric motor filling gaps in the power band and giving the car a relentless pace.

Inside, the cabin balances opulence with intent. Carbon fibre detailing, red starter buttons and customisable M drive settings sit alongside generous space and comfort features, making it as suitable for daily driving as it is for high-speed runs. The new flat-bottom steering wheel with dedicated M1 and M2 buttons adds a touch of drama to the driving environment.

On the road, the M5 can switch seamlessly between quiet hybrid cruising and full-throttle performance. Comfort modes keep it supple and refined for long journeys, while Sport and Track unleash its raw potential. Braking and steering inspire confidence, and the eight-speed automatic transmission is precise whether left to its own logic or worked manually.

The latest M5 is not just an evolution but a reinvention. It retains the character that made the nameplate iconic while embracing hybrid power to meet the demands of the modern era. What results is a saloon that is brutally fast, surprisingly efficient, and still one of the definitive performance cars of its time.
