No wonder they say car mods is a bottomless pit

Re: No wonder they say car mods is a bottomless pit

Jus wanna share some comments on modding.

I use to drive some relatively fast cars for the past 14 years, been modding almost every car I owned...spending at least 15K on each ride some goes beyond 35K. This year I bought a 523i, and its till stock, i had friends asking me, why keep stock, should add kits, SC, 6potter and so on. However whenever I thought of modding, its hard cash, or rather hard earned money, I know when i start modding even with just a kit, I'll nv stop there....

I remember 7 years back when the R34 was quite rare and the Evo6.5 was out. I was at "GR" modding my car, came across a nice white Evo6.5 and I started chatting with the owner. The owner spend more than 100K modding his ride. I was wondering..... "why spend 100K to mod an evo" might as well get a R34Vspec and mod the hell out of it. I finally got the answer from the workshop owner. He said..... owning a R34 is nothing as compared to owning the "fastest" evo in town zzzzz.....:laughlik:

Yes !!! Irrational it might sound, but that precisely defines the passion to mod. Might as well pay for a "better" car some would say, but that logic framework will never end for someone who wanna mod.

Still, to a certain extent, and to be fair, there are "rational" mods and "irrational" mods. What yields and what not pretty much depends on the research done, not just walking into a garage, flashing a credit card and buy everything compatible. This axiom pretty much applies to performance mods and handling enhancement. The mind rules.

As for aesthetics and ICE, there is no rationale at all. The heart rules.

haha, that was wat i did last time... whenever i walk into GR , ask the boss wats good for the car.. watever he recommend, I'll just pay and had a few coffee at nearest famous yong tau foo nearby and collect my car later in the evening... :lol2:

Come to think about it, I should have gone for some real racing courses b4 i start doing up my car....lol, I'm just a straight sprint arse but not the corners (bang many times)

Remembering 1 incident long ago at sepang with some friends watching the Jap GTrace, after the race was feeling like a racer and chiong the NSHW, end up car being tow back to sg...WTF..lol

Yeah, that's the worst. Watching the race you feel so racerboyish then you REALLY chiong like no tomorrow, sometimes really no tomorrow.

By the way nowadays no need to watch race to get pumped up. If seeing the RS4 sperm come out, the new Civic R is much worse ... I went to Kah today, my god, you sit in it, the interior make you feel so racer liao. Even though the car was on display, just sitting in it you believe you can hear the VTEC ... I shudder to think on the road with the engine on what will happen to crazy people like me.

Kenntona,

Ok since you said there are rational and iirational mods, for a simple beng like me:) , are my intended mods rational?

OK, I am gonna Procede V.2 the damn car when it cums! Now that should bring it close to 400bhp/600nm. So in reality it is quite close to the E92 M3's power level. if u look at the pics of the new M3, they put on cross-drilled rotors so that the car can stop as well as it accelerates. The M3 also comes with 18 standard(19 optional) forged rims with PS2 tyres to take advantage of the power. Which means to take advantage of the Procede, I should also need to get 19 forged rims + PS2. Lets say I can live with or like the OEM sports suspension and bodykits and exhaust.

Procede V2 + 19 forged rims(dish type) + PS2 + BBK = about $25k liao:yikess: ...right?

For the BBK, that's mainly because u need a better brake to stop the powerful car else. Else, if u dont tune it up, then u dont really need to change to bbk

IMO, at least upgrade the brakeline to stainless steel one..Trust me, with a heavy car like the current E92 models incl the M3.....the brake is the real weakness on hard driving.

Speaking of BBK, read that u guys are talking about forged vs casr monoblocks...wah...just like rims. So what is a good choice for BBK. Asthetically speaking, cross-drilled or cross-drilled/slotted combo disc type looks cool.

Alcon? Brembo? Stoptech? Wilwood?:juggle:

Just reading Evo mag or other goood car mags at Borders, will inspire me to loot my car more on the way back...:laughlik:

The CTR hatch looks great, with all the space-age styling! Pity its output's shitty compared to the sedan and actually weighs 82kg more... eeks.

You'd know what I mean by mods that are not as rational. Open a Hotstuff or Carma magazine, and you will see tons of funny power-enhancing or fuel-saving "mods" for your car. You and I know some of these are nothing more than snakeoil products. Does not take a rocket scientist to tell.

I think handling mods give the highest yield. Mods like coilovers, sways, struts are relative cheap compare to the better handling you are getting. And brakes - I've always felt stock brakes are insufficient in BMWs. Flame me, but just my feel.

Other than these mods, the rest are backside-itchy mods. Need not doll up the car with kits and spoilers, but if you are itchy, why not? Need not ICEd up the car, but if you are itchy, why not? Need not change to 19" rims, but if you are itchy....... need not change ........

Re: No wonder they say car mods is a bottomless pit

IMO one should begin MODing the ride once they had some feel and understanding of their rides. especially when it comes to performance MODs, e.g increasing bph/nm, changing BBK & ARB,Coilover. One of the best way to realize your car potential and limits its to drive it on the track. Because its the safes. Don't do it on the streets, pls. but if your solely purpose its to have what others have on performance MODs on the same car because some said its best in singapore, and JB, some said batam. then I'm sure your P MODs its a waste of money, because you don't know what it feels like before and after, what it improves and why it improves.

well, the money its yours. spend it wisely.

jus my 2 cents.

must be like me...officially cured from mod virus :cloud9: :cloud9: :cloud9:

Gd value for money is StopTech
Pimp factor cum good performance is Brembo...both hv wide varieties of aft mkt brake pads
Alcon, a legend...and the most expensive here. The lightest too as it's forged monobloc

So for aesthetics, dont bother on Alcon. U are spending too much.

Brembo is probably what you will like as a package.
Cross drilled cost a little more than slotted tho the performance of the latter is better.

Re: No wonder they say car mods is a bottomless pit

I actually think the otherway,
Put some aero kits, OEM for eg which have always gained popularity regardless.

BMW engine is good as it is

Re: No wonder they say car mods is a bottomless pit

I also agree that BMW engines are really good as they are. Moreover they are really not that super robust and overengineered, and the E46 M3 engines should really come with a rebuild cycle stated.

My favourite familar engine is of course the short lived 3L I6 270HP engine. Just beautiful wonderful powerplant. Shortlived because after that they took the engine make it turbo.... now only found in the Z4 3.0SI Coupe ... and perhaps the outgoing 530i and 630i. What a waste for NA fans.

+1 .............. doing looks will be a better idea in my opinion... doing engine works might make the engine less reliable...the engine is good as it is... imho
