Would M5 rims be compatible with a normal e39?

Hi guys,

Need some advice here on compatibility issues. I have been offered a used set of original 18" staggered M5 rims. The front will have to wear 235/40/18 and the rear 265/35/18. I have the following questions:

(i) Can these rims and tyres fit a normal 525i without scraping? (I am worried about the rear and whether I would need to roll the fenders).

(ii) Would there be a huge gap between the tyres and the wheel arches when seen from the side?

(iii) Can the stock suspension cope with this upgrade?

(iv) Can the stock brakes cope with this upgrade?

Many thanks.

hi there,

some years back, i had a set of m5 rims on my e39 520i, no scrubbing etc.

Bro
U sure u want to do this mod? Tyre rotation will be an issue nex time if u care.

But anyway, other than that...
1)There shudnt be any problem with regard to fitting
2) Is ur car lowered? If not, then the gap of the front set up will be just the same as before u change it or if anything will be of negligible difference. As for the rear, the gap will in fact be narrowed due to widening of tyres which make em closer to the rear fender. But then 265 shud be fine.
3) U dont need suspension upgrade
4) Ur stock brakes can cope. But if u put on Supercharger then can not...kekeke...

Cheers

Thanks DVanos - am assuming that u were on staggered rims as well?

Thanks Jack - heard Bimmer tyres dun need to rotate rite? Keke

Andy, i rotate every 8 to 10k km as braking will wear out the inner wall of the tyre fast especially if we have lowered & running on low profile tires. Not so bad for your stock ride but you shd still. As for the offset of those rims, sure it looks good but like Jack said, you can't rotate all round but only from left to right each time, vice-versa for the rear rims.

Does that mean that you are not on a staggered set? Cannot remember but are you on M5 rims or something else? TIA :wavey:

i see my dear fren has taken a keen interest in M5 discussions. :)

Boris, ACBoy is on AC Type II
Not sure if staggered or not but likely No....

Your sig dam bloody nice man!!!!!!

Anyway, Mc Coy's ACS type2 is 19"x8.5J all round & tires are 235/35/19 all round.

Hi Wil,

Need u to gimme some more 101s on rims and tyres. Can u explain to me in layman terms this whole thing abt staggered rims. I cannot figure out how come a 19" rim can wear 235 tyre and a staggered 18" rear rim gotto wear 265 tyre. :errr: Izzit becoz of the 8.5J etc? Then how to ensure that odometer not affected leh.

Yup, it all depends on the width size of the rims (eg. 8.5J)

To have tires of 265 width, U must have at least 9.5J rims.....

Here is a sample list for you in PDF from Yokohama AVS Sports....

The idea of staggered rims is, first of all, used for a rear driven wheel car like BMW or in some, AWD like 911 996 Turbo

In a way, it's to reduce the enormous oversteering that cud hv happened had the rear width been the same as the front given the high level of torque that is goin thru the rear wheel for example.
If all same size, I suppose you will end up with alot of rear wheel spin and even traction control can't help enough.

Generally speaking...
Try to stay within the recommended tyre size given the rim width. How to check? Well, all tyre manufacturers specify the permissible rim width for X tyre size.. Ensure u check the table bro!

So rim width will affect how wide the tyres can sit in..
Give u example for M3....Front 8J wears 225/45/18 while rear 9J 255/40/18..A rather unique set up as far as the tyre profile hence difficult to get the tyres...but not the end of the world coz one can change the spec slightly.

I hv heard of people in US used up to 255/40 vs 285/35 on the stock rims which I think it's insane. Bit out in my opinion. Best I would personally do is to push out 10mm more only from the stock.

Also remember, wider tyres , while giving u better grip, it increases the chance of hydroplaning....So there is a cost vs benefit scenario here

For u case bro
Think u shud go 245/40 Front and 275/35 using that staggered M5 rims.
BMW M car set up is usually 30mm differential apart front and back
So 225F/255R like in a regular M3, 235F/265R in CSL.

Last,...an increase in diameter will affect ur odometer accuracy. ie not accurate anymore haha...ooopps...That is why some people use some electronic tool (GPS linked I suppose ) to aid for a better reading.

Cheers

nobody ask you to buy an M5 what... keke... hmmm.. come to think of it... i do remember saying "go for it!"

Dear Shawn and KL,

Please be more understanding, Boris has just bot a E39 520i and is trying to mod it like a M5. Next time when u all see his car, try to control your laughter when u see the M5 badge at the rear.

I heard the car is only half don up only ! It's not even facelifted and needless to say, don even have angeleye ! But the rear mirror, seat and exhaust pipe all done up to make it look like a M5 though we all know it's only a 520....

And yes, the rear wheel is staggered as well and he got the M5 rims also......

Anyway to answer Andy and Boris question...

The M5 wheel offset is 20mm for front and 22mm rear..

The normal 5er is 20mm throughout so i supposed it will fit...

Now is just a matter of whether the rear will scrub, which is unlikey so considering the 2 car's chassis is the same... unlike M3, which has got bigger wheel arch than the normal 3er..

Lucky u boris, now u can smoke ppl by saying it's a M5

Hi Les, i'm not on staggered. 19"x8.5J all round. Slight correction on tyre size, I'm running on 245x35x19 instead of 235 mentioned by Wil.:) OT - have you been in touch with Tony of late?

Do note that it is my wife who will be driving the car most of the time. So if BMW.SG folks see her on the road, pls try not to smoke tyres and rev engine at traffic lights n challenge her can?

And yes piggy, it's a 520 but on a good and proper vitamin diet :laughlik:
