I have used those Motorola Talkabout and it is hopeless. Inside building, it is good for no more than 200 metres! I have tried differnt models and they are all hopeless. Have three sets lying in my office.

I now use a made-in-china Motorola OEM (that's what they claimed). Handset at about S$150 including postage (per unit). Comes with extra battery and headset. They claim range to be about 10 to 15 Km. I am using it and is very happy with it.

In-vehicle unit is about US$180. Range is supposed to be 20 Km.

If you are ordering these WTs, some useful features would be:
- able to lock keys (you don't want to accidently change the channel)
- able to scan for channels (in case your other partner accidently change channel)
- extra battery (ideally low cost)
- availability of car charger. Normal battery useful life only about 4 to 6 hours.

i'm getting kinda cheesed off by some of the remarks in here. i know you guys wanna put in your two cents, but look, i don't like being made to look like a liar. to me, these models work fine.

i'm not making any money off this group buy. it's just a service i'm offering to my good brothers here at bmw-sg. i'm not promoting this particular model and brand. i'm just saying that I USE IT and I THINK IT IS FINE. if any of you can organize a price better than this, please do go ahead.. don't just come and say: oh, i can get you super-space talkies for USD***!

my good buddy discom has just mentioned to me on msn.. there are tons of others uses for talkies other than for NS runs. for example, we could use them during cs sessions. not everyone here wants to use it for NS runs. the thread title is "walkie talkie group buy". it is not "walkie talkie group buy for NS runs".

so to all of you who have nothing positive (note: positive and constructive are two DIFFERENT things) to say, please stay out.

if you wanna organize a sale or group buy for your industrial standard talkies, then please go ahead. but don't come in here and OT my pants off.

all of you know i'm a cool guy. everyone on this list is my friend. so please hor.. enough of your crap. i'm frustrated because it takes effort to organize such a thing.. look for prices, look for dealers, drive there during lunch.. discuss. organize payment. delivery. it's not just one bloody china phonecall away.

anyway, to all of you, like smyuen and the rest of the seniors who have given their heartfelt reviews on the product, i'm very thankful. those were constructive, to me. at least i learnt and i now know what model to get if i make frequent NS trips in a convoy.

but for now.. let's just continue with this group buy and cut the OT.

bro, dun get upset about the other comments. We all know that this is a basic walkie and not those extensive type. Thanks for organising it for all of us. Appreciate your effort in this and of course we do hope we can also get the colour of our choice if the supplier can commit to that as well.
