saify,

a set of 2 talkies for $90 is quite alrite... do we get a set each or shared between 2 person?

Shd be a pair of walkies per order bro. :)

Re: walkie talkie group buy.

HI Bros, are u guys still really going for that Motorola or that Vertex one ??

Let me just add my 2 cents to what Piggy said...i agree 110pct with him that Vertex is way much better as we have used them i think numeroous times on our convoy.

I have the current Motorola sets and i honestly have to say the said range quoted does not really perform..cant even do 1km range on NS highway and seriously a waste of money imo. The worst part u will realise later is the volume, which even at max will be very soft/hard to hear especially when u r running fast (outside turbulence, music, etc) and u will keep asking the other guy to repeat what he is saying.

Sorry to OT. Cheers

Re: walkie talkie group buy.

a good, healthy mix of opinions here :)

i've been using the motorolas for a year la.. i've not tried the vertexes or what not, so i'm not in a position to compare. but in my car, it serves me fine :)

of course again, you must compare prices. if you're willing to pay upwards of $200, i'm sure quality would be better.

anyway, the bulk of us would be using these talkies for a variety of other reasons, not just for NS runs.

do let me know :)

alvin: yes, they come in a set. but if you wanna have just one side, then you could sell off one of your handsets to someone else.. just an idea :)

Re: walkie talkie group buy.

Those intending to buy walkies must evaluate the usage and get those suitable for that specific purpose. Like what piggy said, get the Vertex if convoy comms is what you want on NS-h'way. The Talkabout range are ok for short-range comms that dun involve speeds and much distance.

The T5500 range is good if you and a couple of cars needs to stay in touch while driving within sight of each other. Other than that...forget it.

The next Talkabout level up is the SX700 range which has a 'claimed' unobstructed range of 12miles (better than T5500 8 miles). However, this was tested to be effective up to about 600m in a HDB estate (not direct line of sight). So, also dun expect too much.

Effectiveness of walkies are measured in watts. The T5500 is effectively about 0.5W, the SX700 reaches up to 2w. Ideally, 4-5w is what you guys want for effective longer range comms and if not wrong, the Vertex is within this range.

If you guys want a quote for the Talkabouts, try Feedback Comms 2nd Level SL Sq. The shop is packed with Talkabouts units and will explain the features according. They also claim that there are 'chiong' ones out there that are cheaper and look exactly the same except for the circuitry which emit higher radiation signals.

Re: walkie talkie group buy.

hi fellas,

thanks for supporting.

for those who have your name down, i've ordered for you your talkies already. they are at a price of $90 nett., including gst. it's the best they could do la.

if you want, i could order a pair of handsfree cords for you as well at a price of $30 a pair. this would be useful while driving. give me your views on this. it'll be a genuine motorola handsfree.

cheers and thanks for participating!

saify.

hmm.. i'll check with this place. see if i can get a better model for the price or a better price for this model :)

i'm pretty sure, however, that mine aren't "chiong" ones. rest assured.

stay tuned!

Re: walkie talkie group buy.

I'm actually hoping to use these Moto walkies for skiing and local drives, does anyone know whether in the mountains eg. ski resorts if this T5500 model is good enough or is the SX700 longer range one more suitable?

do note that these walkis are good for local drives; once on North South in a >5 cars convoy traveling over 130kmh, the reception will be poor. Also, the frequency and channels cannot be programmed or changed. If you guys are planning for a lot of North South drives, may also want to consider models like to motorola GP328 range....

Totally agree, do not waste your monies on these. Get the GP328 where the frequencies can be programmed. Note that these sets cannot be programmed to GP328 range of frequency.

Re: walkie talkie group buy.

hi guys!!

seems there are quite a few of our friends that have strong views against the t5500r sets. in view of this, to be fair to everyone, i'll put the order on hold.

if your name is still on the list by late tonight, i'll go ahead with the order and try to make deliveries tomorrow night :) give you guys some time to change your mind if you need to.

do understand.. i don't doubt what these guys are saying.. in the same way that an m5 performs wayyyyy better than a 523i, they are both essentially the same thing and owners of both would be happy with the money spent :)

for me, i'm happy with what i spent. i wouldn't spend close to $400 on talkies la.. i'd rather buy a mobile phone man.

cheers!

Eugene, I used mine when I was snowboarding in TO. Worked pretty decent. Mine's the old model with 5KM range.

Re: walkie talkie group buy.

I wld think those who are planning to get the Talkabouts are buying them not for convoying purposes up North. I for one am buying them to communicado with my missus when in the shopping mall, at East Coast Park or overseas (when walking some distance from missus) etc and I am buying coz they are light.

If I need walkies for convoy, then I wld be getting the heavy duty ones for sure.

Ok thanks, so this one with 8 miles range should work as good or better....cool!

Re: walkie talkie group buy.

Hi Saify,

I wonder if it is too late to include one set for myself.

My application is very simple. You see it is very useful especially when you are going for a oversea shopping trip with family. e.g when you are in crowded places like Mah Boon Kong or J J market or Theme parks. They easier way to contact your family members is to use this walkie talkie. In this case, you dun have contact them thru mobile which is actually using oversea call..

If possible, please PM me on how to make payment

Yo saify,

Nice of you to organise a group buy...

I have a motorolla vertex set which i got for $380... i was also like you then... like why pay so much for a walkie??

but its worth it, esp if you are going up north with convoys - sepang, road trips to KL, malacca etc.... taking into account the rental is already $15 per day if you rent one...

and the reception is much better than the talk-abouts.... which honestly to me are more for leisure use in town driving or say a day at the beach...

seriously, if you guys are intending to do frequent trips up north, its a good investment!

Cheers!

Re: walkie talkie group buy.

hi guys,

i'm pleased with the response from everyone. this is what a forum is for anyway.. learning :) now we've learnt about three different types of walkies. haha..

yes, i agree with smyuen.. these talkies are more for leisure use. most of the guys buying it are gonna use it for simpler things like night drives and such.. not much for NS runs.

cheers!! and whoever wants to add names, just add.. we'll settle the rest later.
