yes th epurpose of marking the number there is for you to kown which lock key to open it,oherwise once lost it that is you have to force open?anyway is just a alloy.
Just for your info, to tight the nuts of screw is more dangenrous,that is why torque wrench is used to prevent over tightening.

by the way, what is the torque pundage on a E46.. i have a torque wrench handy, and would like to make sure it is the right tightness. change tyres at a kuching kurap shop i believe that they may over tightened.

if they used those power tool , more prompt to OVER tighten.
problem of OVER tighened
you are likely not able to change your flat tyre if you got a flat.(too tight)
It may caused cross thread(jammed) (you wont know this till your next taking out)
have seen some even damaged the LUG nut Hexagonal head.
TORQUE the best or at least manua tool
