If it's.. I will give it a miss...

I don't think high mileage cars are unreliable. Overseas cars are very high mileage but they still drive without issue. There could be many reasons why cars break down. like what xiaofoggy said, if the car is well taken care, you should have no worry about getting a high mileage car as it has proven its worth to you.

Wear and tear not covered under 6 mth lemon law...

I used to think low milege was good. But thats bad because it means u'll be the one replacing alot of parts down the road. High milege if owner took care of it well and parts changed regularly, just ask for a lower price and drive it without fuss :)

haha... I am not referring to wear and tear stuff to be covered under 6mth lemon law but rather those major item like gearbox and engine leak.

Re: Things to look out for in a >100km used E90 318i

I tell u... u really want to drive a bimmer?

There's a 320i on auction on sgCarMart. I went to see the car. It is completely kaput. I connected an OBD2 scanner and it showed more than 10 errors. Engine has sludge build up. Coolant reservoir is dry. But if you have the cash to spare, go bid 33k for it (31k is the paper value, so paper+2K is like scrap value). Then spend 15k get engine and gearbox overhaul and all the dingdong fixed. You will have a working 320i with a depre of about 7k... dare to take the risk?

You looked under the oil filter housing of the 318i ? That part not easy to clean off the leaked oil ....

Re: Things to look out for in a >100km used E90 318i

Getting an OBD2 scanner and plugging it in to check for engine faults seems to be a good idea.
Else would have to send to a workshop for a more thorough check up.

I dont think I have the time to overhaul this 320i though. Too much hassle for me. :(

Yes the mileage was quite scary... maybe previous owner had to drive quite a bit for work purposes...

If I'm not wrong, the lemon law only covers engine and gearbox?
Anyone please correct me if I am wrong.

Thanks for the suggestion. I may do that to get a better idea of the condition of the car. :)

the best time is to ask the seller if he mind letting you send the car to a workshop (site sponsor) for an evaluation / QC check at your cost.

should cost you $80-90 bucks only.

i had mine checked previously and the valvetronic motor and some o ring was found to be due for replacement. the dealer and I split the cost 50/50 to have it changed. saved around 300+

no QC, no buy.

116K km in 3.5yrs is quite high mileage and problem tend to surface around this time.

Re: Things to look out for in a >100km used E90 318i

Send to workshop for a diagnostics.

If Kiasu, send to 3 workshops for diagnostics and make sure all 3 report the same faults, if any.

That's what I did before I purchased mine :D

To all experienced bros/sis,

I would like to find out what would be the main things to check/look out for when getting a used E90 318i that has more than 100km mileage on them. The engine bay area and bottom are totally clean with no oil spills or leaks from what I can see. Thanks in advance!

I would advice not. Had a 82k mileage on a 3.4 years old E46 318 before and all i can say is quite a lot things will happen within the next 1.5 years. I changed the entire cooling system and aircon compressor all within before 5 years. not that I am not expecting the issues which are not extremely major but the trips to the workshop.... really makes me think twice about buying a high mileage BMW. so after that I got a 60k KM 523. much better. i won't recommend paying a high premium for low mileage vehicles just for the sake of it but never pay cheap for a high mileage. if you know what i mean.

Re: Things to look out for in a >100km used E90 318i

Its all heng sway one. Mileage tampering is so easy. At least the auction car got real mileage. Does it really matter? Rather than let the dealer earn $10k, you take a more calculated risk by bidding low for the car then immediately tow to workshop, engine out gearbox out, overhaul all, compressor change, alternator change, fuel pump change, even if it takes 1 month, just leave it there. Once done all happy, drive off.

Otherwise so scared just buy new car. Don't later kena called cheap then people jio u exchange singpass :p
