well, i had bought the e38 direct from the factory and had it shipped here. i handled all the necessary clearances and subsequent LTA paperwork.

Hi MaxPower

I am just curious to know of the following

a. Were there costs savings compared to buying from the local PML dealer?
b. Did you experienced like any push back from PML when it came to servicing your self-imported model?
c. Was LTA's paperwork very easy to administer and fill in (ie did LTA made it very very difficult so as to discourage a trend to self-import?)

Pls advise... - much appreciated

couldn't have been easier ... in fact, the ladies at the desk went out of their way to ensure a speedy completion. i was impressed ...

hope this helps.

Re: self-import a new car, anyone?

only major issue is you need to check if performance will gaurantee the warranty. i believe its a worldwide one but heard sometimes they won't gaurantee? is that true?

Re: self-import a new car, anyone?

is it possible to import any road car? Meaning LTA does not need to test a first of type and approve?

Re: self-import a new car, anyone?

yes, you will need to get it homologated if it has not been done for our local roads.

if you're bringing in the 1st specimen of its kind, then you will have to go through this process.

hope this helps...

Yes warranty covers worldwide, but all repairs you got to pay in advance & they will claims on your behalf .
If you send in for checking & rectify problems all are chargerble .

Cheers

I see..ok.. if it is not passed you risk wasting your investment and have to send it back.
so moral of the story is, import yourself, cars that are already available here in singapore.

Thanks for the clarification!

Guess doing the paperwork seems do-able diy. Any idea what is the freight and handling cost involved and how about importing a new second hand.

Cheers

Re: self-import a new car, anyone?

Hi

I self imported a Boxster from UK 2009. Bought direct from AD there. Savings was about 30%. But that's due to a combination of good FX, UK pricing and COE. Likely less arbitrage delta now. You can search my earlier postings for details. You can also search my postings on www.porschesgforum.com on this topic.

Warranty wise, important thing is to get your name registered in the manufacturers system. If you buy direct from say UK authorized dealers then you are automatically in the system - Stuggart then honored the 2 year warranty, no issues. I guess PML would have to do likewise. If you get it from other dealers then Local dealers can refuse repair. They can also charge you about 10-15k adoption fee.

You can just about DIY everything in the import process EXCEPT freight clearance. You need TradeNet for that. Local freight company will do it for a couple of hundred bucks..

Do note you have to pay everything cash - don't think you can get a loan.

Also there are some steps you cant miss or you will suffer when the car reaches Singapore. Example you need to have manufacturer original certificate of emission compliance. Even for homologated cars. No cert, no entry. The certain takes months so you have to ask upon ordering.

Also different countries have different export schemes. Make sure you check. In UK insist on VX302 to save yourself 20% VAT. Freight should be about 3000 SGD and must be declared as part of OMV.

Last I enquire, the Porsche UK route is now closed since Stuggart complained to PORSCHE - they can't sell cars to Singaporeans anymore. Other Marques, I dont know.

Good luck!

New second hand? Oxymoron?

Importing used cars has two issues
- it attracts an additional 10k tax
- your 10 OMV starts from the day of original registration in foreign country, not Singapore. So say the car is 2 yrs old, the PARF only lasts 8 yrs.

Re: self-import a new car, anyone?

From what I know... if you import the car urself and you have warranty issues pml will honor it... But you have to pay an adoption fee of 10 - 30k before they do anything... And you also have to pay for the repair first before BMW asia return you the money... Therefore i think if you wanna import yourself then dun go back to pml...
