OPEN DISCUSSION - Sub groups forums.

Re: OPEN DISCUSSION - Sub groups forums.

ryan, can i ask if aside from making this place a better forum. are there any other motivations? ie to generate income etc...

dun get me wrong. there is nothing wrong with that of cos. but i think it will make us understand better why there shud be a need to.

also i wanna highlight that we have 16 other people voicing opinions here that you shud consider. i noticed u only mentioned ken n centurion.

Bobby,

Just as an example, and honestly your idea gave me the idea to start a new section dedicated for our users to sell their own stuff :) No bad intentions.

That answer would be..

To build a structure to manage the flow of information and user groups in a better way.

I've been tweaking the forum structure for the past 2-3 weeks (new design / new categories), and seeing the outcome of the results.

Some(in fact most) changes are made without the opinion of others. I would like to see how this user grouping would affect discussions / social relationships if we did so.

Would postings be more? Would more focused postings be better? Would a mix be better? How would this affect users?

Those are my intentions. :)

Re: OPEN DISCUSSION - Sub groups forums.

To add on, there's no benefit to me, or to anyone else if we were to degrade everyone's experience.

After all, i did have REQUESTS before that i start sub-groupings. You guys know who you are... I initially ignored the requests as i didn't believe this could be possible in a forum situation like this.

The new forum software upgrades HAS built in new social user groupings ( where users can join/leave a group), and I'm tempted to upgrade.

Re: OPEN DISCUSSION - Sub groups forums.

well, i think addition of certain sub-groups would help to streamline the postings, make it better to manage plus help create an identity for certain members, building a sense of belonging. the forum itself is too big for one to get to know everyone, for beginners.even i feel kinda lost at some of our big sunday meetups. however that feeling goes away quickly after i see ppl i know from the forum. groups such my Club Sandy (most E36ers) or E46ers or even the E90 division would help the newbies and even existing members to know each other better. the aim is not to divide members into their individual groups but to help them assimilate better and faster into the community. Most group outings are not restricted to their own members, even alot of non-E36ers join my Club Sandy outings.

Marques aside, Ryan u could consider maybe a sub-group for certain interests groups such as trackies....even non-trackie like me are interested in getting to know all those tracking experience after hearing their experiences at Pasir Gudang or Sepang.

however, there should be a limit to the sub-sub-sub based on the needs and demand of members. there will help to prevent a clutter or maze for members to navigate in the future.

all that folder and categorisation are quite bewildering given the size of our forum and its existing folders. so i think we should give ryan ample time to consider and even try out some of the suggestions.

just my 2 cents.....have fun ppl

I've been in this forum for a few years now, and it has been all good. Its also good to see admin and members looking into and determine if the forum can be improved, that is a progression to improve longevity and useful of bmw-sg.

my point is, a clique has an informal structure, let it remain that way. trying to create and contain sub groupings is akin to constrain all developments of a mature society, keep it informal, yes it may appear messy at times, but within the potpourri let the flowers bloom.

also, u shld appoint one dedicated solid welcome committee to welcome newbies lah. alot SQ stewardess wanna join BMW forum but say no welcome committee so they left leh......

anyway bro, the answer is clear lah....mostly all vote no sub sub leh, or else forum BO LANG liao........

Re: OPEN DISCUSSION - Sub groups forums.

Shameless, I want to be in the welcome committee!!!

Bobby confirm involve too~!!!

Opps~ sorry Ryan.. OT but too excited.. i zipped~

Re: OPEN DISCUSSION - Sub groups forums.

I find the forum in its present state serves the bmw enthusiast in Singapore well...

having a few tweaks be fine but further dividing the folders into group specifics like E30s, E46s, E60s, E92s...will not serve the people both regulars, moderators and admins well.

if this had been done earlier, i would never have joined the charity drive and met many fabulous people there...

also for owners E92,93s...many whom were ex E46 owners...wouldnt it be more tedious for them?

personally i feel the different sub groups at meetups is already too much...

the few months i been back, i noticed a group of "supercars" owners whom do frequent the forum reaching the meetup place earlier...but choose to remain in their small circle and wouldnt stay just a little longer at meetups to mingle and share their knowlege...when my humble E46 318i comes around they choose to be 'atas' when I park beside them and say hi cos there arent any lots nearby anyway...
and these people seem to be the ones whom are/will be supporting the sub sub groups move...dare we say they will be positively contributing to the forum?

1 more point to add, sharing of knowlege and experiences need not necessarily be full of jargon, figures...etc in our various folders
not everybody appreciates that...in fact most regulars and noobies i dare say will be more than put off by it and hence remain lurkers or shy away from the forum...
doing so will only make the situation worse...

and we gotta give it to those whom cannot understand and yet choose to laugh it off and still remain a friendly character hence contributing to the positive spirit of the community even when a select few look down at them and either knowingly or unknowingly exclude others in their sharing/discussions...with "POWdERFUL" language...

hence no please...no further segregation of folders or people...

Re: OPEN DISCUSSION - Sub groups forums.

seriously... isnt the point of this forum was created in the first place is to bring a group of people together regardless of marque and models of ride?

i have to admit there are many sub groups around... but all of us still act like one afterall... we come to meetups together... we come for kopi together... be it club sandy... or E92/3 gang... or E90 group or BVO group or J4C grp or SWC grp..

i think in life... we know there will be sub groups of people of same interest and different personality and clique... but should we encourage this openly? such as creating another forum to diversify an already united community?

those who want to create sub group...go out for kopi together... they can organize it outside the forum... thats more of a personal matter rather than splitting an already united forum...

in the end if ryan is going to impliment this... the headings on top of your internet explorer should be changed to The BMW Singapore diversified community...

haha.. no offence to anyone..just my 2cents

Lemme use a real-life example. Take BoTay, who is a car lover of sorts, but not technically-inclined to post complex formulae nor share certain knowledge in the forum. But he yearns to join in. My guess is that the staunchest of the auto-purist will prefer him not to post, given that he cannot participate nor interact or share in the forum. Would you "dump" him in the social forum? If the answer is YES, then we might as well start another forum, given the segregating profiling of the forumer here. The purists wants nothing but an "organised" and "searchable" automotive forum. BoTay cannot fit in, prefers to skim that forum initially. BoTay gradually participates actively in the social forum in a more casual manner, one perceived by the purists as bantering and OTing. As time passes, given the information flows, BoTay will not need to surf the purist side. He will drop off the purist forum altogether.

And many BoTay will do the same.

End result - a split. Two meet-ups, two D&Ds, two sets of events....... worse, site sponsors will have to fork out higher fees and so on......

Is splitting the forum a solution to the problem to cluttered information? No.

Better solution - let BoTay assimilate and learn to conform to the cultures of the forum. Then the next issue will be to shape the culture of the forum, via various active forumers...... there might be more than a group with dominant sub-cultures, and there and then the sub-groupings are already formed without the admin drawing lines and enclose them in. The admin simply needs to work closer with the sub-group participants in shaping their forum cultures - which works perfectly in some sub-groups given the "infiltration" of few moderators.

This is already happening. Let it take its course.

+1

i agreed totally with kenn on the BoTay example... jokes aside...although i was laughing my ass off when i see the post for the first time..

i would say the automotive purist should not discriminate on forumers who are not experience enough about cars... and asking stupid newbie question.. because i have alot of friends who are in the forum and they never post due to the exact reason... lack of self esteem , being afraid to be labelled as newbie or idiot...

i myself was flamed , suaned or whatsoever when i first joined the forum 3 years ago asking newbie and stupid question...

my thoughts at that time : ' i am not going to post here again... if what they want is intelligent question and answers all the time'

then i start becoming active in the forum after being what kenn mentioned a social member who come to meetups and make friends..thats who i get to know people..join the sub groups and start becoming active in the forum..

ok before people start reminding me that i am going out of topic... let me go back..

the reason our forum exist is NOT to satisfy existing member...with sub groups forums.. which will be too much in my honest opinion...

the reason this forum exist is because we want to give information..be it newbie or advanced or even highly technicall details...to existing members and newbie..

with an occasional OT and jokes....

if with this open forum we are already diversified enough ( just go see the meetups) and already difficult to newbie to catch up or even asking serious question... what if we create more sub forum... its going to be more luan and u can forget about newbie appreciating our forum...

bottom line..

our forum do not need to satisfy the needs of already existing members to talk more useful/unuseful stuff between their community or sub groups.. they can do it themselves outside the forum...

lets make this forum back to what the forum was created for... for finding information about BMW mainly..and other marques are welcomed as well.. and the occasional social discussions and making friends on the lounge section..

ryan , rather than thinking of implimenting sub groups , i would rather you impliment the demerit system point... coming from someone who talks alot of OT... this should mean something if i feel that this forum is getting out of hand with our own discussion which should be done outside the forum (which i feel that by creating sub groups will make this worse... not improve the situation)

pardon me if the post gets out of point... i come from the BoTay category afterall...
