My E46 in the USA

Re: My E46 in the USA

Wondering if I should go for this gathering in May if I have the time

Re: My E46 in the USA

Replaced my cooling system today with the help of another E46er I found on the e46fanatics forum. He was kind enough to offer his help, tools and garage for the project. I didn't have time to take pictures at every stage, but here are the few I captured:

The old GEBA pump (left) I pulled out looks more sturdy than the GRAF pump (right) I installed:

Thermostat and water pump out. I don't know why the old coolant is green:

It took us 4 hours not including filling the system with new coolant (takes time to bleed the air bubbles out, go for test drive, cool down and re-fill) but was a good experience.

Re: My E46 in the USA

Great job !

Does the Graf have plastic impellers ?

That was a bane for quite a few e46 previously ......

Nope, the GRAF has metal impellers. Sheet metal held by spot welds.
The GEBA looks like it's cast metal.

If I still have the car when it's time for another overhaul I'd probably try the Saleri (OEM) pump.

Met with some other bimmers and went out for a cruise today. Here are some of the pics I took and a video someone else recorded:

Re: My E46 in the USA

Tuesday night meet. About 15 cars showed up, which is not bad for a weekday night. Pictures taken by someone else:

Re: My E46 in the USA

Went out for a mountain drive in the north georgia mountains with some other bimmers, mustangs and mazdas. The downhill sections are tough on the brakes and I had to shift manually after my brakes started fading...These pictures were taken only when we stopped.

You have a real need for BBKs and watch out for stags ......

I dont think my 17"s can clear BBKs....but perhaps i will get better pads and rotors next time. I also need to do a suspension refresh soon because the car doesnt handle that well. Im thinking of getting the Koni Str.t kit which has the Koni orange shocks and H&R sport springs. Just gotta save up for it...

Re: My E46 in the USA

Replaced my CCV system today.

Practiced connecting the new hoses together:

Took out the air box, MAF and cabin filter housing

DISA and ICV out:

Fuel rail cover out. You can see that brittle CCV connecting hose running along the side of the engine:

Old CCV which is very hard to reach:
uPXt0cT.jpg

New hose connecting the CCV and oil dipstick tube just went in:

Trying to find the position for the new CCV. Probably the toughest part of the procedure because it is so hard to fit and twist the hose that goes 90 degrees upwards:

New connecting hose beside the engine:

New CCV screwed in:

Didnt take pics of the re-installation process, but here is the old CCV system all brittle and cracked apart:

My back hurts from bending over and my fingers are tender from all that fiddling around. I hope never to do it again. Now where is a cold beer when I could use one?!

Re: My E46 in the USA

Went to the Caffeine and Octane car meet today. Lots of cars, probably >500 and pretty early too. To get a spot with other cars of the same make you have to arrive by 6.30 am or so. Needless to say I wont be going so often, but here are the pics I took:

Re: My E46 in the USA

Went to test drive an i3 at the dealership yesterday. From the driver's seat it looks like I'm sitting in a minivan because there was alot of space on the dash, and it handles like a really quick golf cart. It was certainly a different experience from my E46 especially driving with the regenerative braking feature.

Re: My E46 in the USA

Which part of the brake regeneration feature was interesting for you ?

I enabled that on a ride recently ..... Was quite passive.
