you again!!! knew it was your post the moment i saw the subject. keke. :wavey:

Mounting on the centre consol has been done on quite a few of cars. But IMHO...not very nice cos the screen is between the 2 front seats. Given a option, I would go for the screen behind headrest option as its looks better and you can actually hide the screen by making a cover for your headrest so that you can slip the cover on when you are away from your car.

If you have proper setup, you can even be playing different source on the 2 screen. One can be watching DVD/VCD while the other can be playing games....both will have their own headphones to play their respective source while the driver gets some peace and quiet.

i dont know if they have it for the E39, but i've seen centre console mounted BMW screens that prop up from 2 legs from either side of the rear section of the centre console. probably for the e65 or the x5. maybe e39 have? have u tried asking pml?

Why is the mounting between the 2 front seats not so nice? I dont mean to be rude but just want to seek your opinion cos you have seen a couple of actual installations. You know how it is - picture worth a thousand words...Thinking about it, my initial concern was that the mount would be too low.

On the more complex system of DVD/VCD and games simuntaneously, I dont want to go down that route. Just want to have DVD/VCD so that the 2 monkies in the back seat leave me in peace!

Good point. Will check with Grick(sp?)

Does anyone know if using one of the radio frequencies to play the sound for the DVD player is my only choice? Assuming (And I do) that I want to keep the original headunit in the car?

thanks! it has been awhile, hasn't it? :)

and i still haven't had my taxi rides!

Don't you start...That's entirely your fault..... have had to rely on new wingman to go and test drive my potential acquisitions.

Hi Boris,

Some people in the US selling a black fabric carrier of sort to be hitched behind each headrest. Each carrier will be able to hold a portable DVD player. That will fulfil your desire to have 2 TV screens. The good thing abt that is you can always unhitch and keep your DVD player in the boot if you park in a unsafe place.

If cost of no issue, why not pay $5k for a GPS as the e39 GPS comes with TV :)

2 champion proposals!

Do you have the website link for the carrier?

GPS Screen is really cool cos got original look but problem is the kids wouldnt be able to see from their seats. Think if at all possible, will explore whether there is a E39 verison of what is offered for the X5 and E65.

i would suggest against using radio frequency for the sound. first of all, there isnt really a single clear channel you can use, and secondly the moment you drive into malaysia, you'll realise that your used frequency is being used by a msian radio station, and you have to manually search again. thirdly, sound reproduction is horrible.

2 way of mounting in the centre. One is to use a bracket and mount from the there. Bracket is attached to the seat from the bottom (this installation no problem for Japaness cars but for conti might have a problem due to installer cannot find a nut to attach the bracket too.)

The other way would be to mount directly on to the consol itself. (which is damn ugly cos you have a screen sticking out...and off course there is the thief tempting to smash your window factor to consider on).

Seriously if mounting on your headrest is not a issue and you just want to keep the kids QUIET and have peace in your ride...why not consider those portable VCD/DVD player with built in screen ? Quite cheap now...those Shinco ones....

Since you are talking to Tye Electronics....they should be able to give you a fairly accurate idea what they can do. if not for 2nd opinion, speak to Swift Motion /Sam....he is good at customisation too.

RB,

Agree with you but there seems no choice if you want to play DVDs.

Unless of course the CD changer in the boot can be replaced with a DVD player?

BTW, am definately going with Tye and their solution of a single screen together with bracket mounted above centre console. If any of you have ridden in the airport car service from Kg Arang, this is done by Tye. Saw it at lunch time and am impressed by the quality of workmanship. Looks good and is nicely integrated. Only thing missing is a non radio frequency DVD solution....

Tye has a bracket solution which is installed in PMLs airport service cars. Saw it and like it so will go with that solution. Thought about using the portable system (incidentally, I do have the Shinco player for the kids when I am on holiday driving!!!) coupled with the piggyback harness tha T6 was kind enough to bring to my attention but we decided that that solution just looks a little temporary.

Thanks very much for all your help and advice guys... will try and take some photos when the install is done.

If Tye has a solution for the bracket...go for that...at least its neater than mounting on the center consol.

A ride in your ICEd 5er would be nice...I got nice racing video...you can pretend to be Motoya..... :laughlik:
