How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

Think about it another way. Sell the E90 get a 40K MPV second hand, use the additional cash to help finance the selfish car.

You do realise that the recent government cuts on the importation tax and also the road tax is a step towards us owning multiple cars for niche purposes too right? It may not have been the specific purpose of the legislation, but it sure seems so.

And an example of a $40k used MPV will be?

I realy dunno yet, just go SGcarmark put the 40K there and see what they give you.

Singapore Used Car Listings - sgCarMart

but also, can go to car dealer and see what they have which is not listed here. Or try private sale through forums. Most of these are re-exported, you won't see many at the listings.

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

"but how would you feel if one of them trip and fall on his or her face while getting out of the car?"

OK as long as nothing gets dented or scratched.

Oh, you meant how would I feel about *them*? :):)

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

Mr Beng: the two-car route sounds tempting, until you start thinking like this: "Imagine what kind of car I can get if I COMBINE all that money and put it into ONE car!!!!!"

Sorry to sabo you.....but that's what is happening to me!

Now the discussion is slanting towards retaining the E90(partly bcos selling it now losses big time on value) and "Ok to consider a Coupe/Cabriolet".

How about keeping the E90 and buy a nice Japanese roadster?

The MX-5/MR-S are sensible second cars financially vis a vis the Z4/SLK/Boxster. All handle decently and can go topless

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

A used MPV for 40k? I guess something like a Wish or Stream could fall in that category. Plenty of Wish-es in the mkt given its popularity here.

Having said that, the new Stream is not bad IMO. I think it cost mid 50s to 60s (top spec).
I noticed though the 'peformance' types tend to go for the Odyssey although I dislike the car and their distracting HIDs...

Cheers,
B

Hyundai? No thx u sir :laughlik: . That was the worst of all my previous rides(a matrix). It was so bad I didnt wash it since the day I bought it. Wife complaining since day-1. It was supposed to be an economy picnic car, big mistake....the freaking FC is more than a 320i. Aceleration lose to Renault Kangoo. Drink like a Camel. Heavy like a Hippo. Sounds like a Baboon. Looks like a loaf of bread. Styled by Pinin Farina(who feel asleep during the project).

Actually I cant recall why I bought that creature. No way Hyundai:screwedu:

i thot this is an option to consider. test drove the hardtop MX5, not bad.

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

well...frankly speaking, it just boils down to how bad one wants the 2 door and $$$$. all that bravado hard talk abt getting ppl to appreciate the fact that they are sitting in a car compared to taking a bus or mrt. for frens or colleagues maybe we can think in that way but for family, aged parents, babies, kids....nope....family comes first, at least for me. believe me...a few yrs back, i was very hung onto the idea of getting a MR2 or S13....very very bent on getting one. As for AhBEng, try doing some maths on it....sell e90, get 2 door or sell e90, get 2 door and mpv, keep e90 buy 2 door hypothesis. end of the day, if money wasn't the question, we would have gotten 2 cars instead...dont we? better to calculate the money part before deciding.

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

I love 2-door cars but in my view, you can only contemplate owning a 2-door coupe/cabriolet/roadster if it is a 2nd car or you do not need to carry much luggage around, say on driving trips to Malaysia or when you go to Changi airport to pick up your family members. Most 2-door cars have limited luggage space, especially the cabriolets/roadsters when their roofs are stowed away.

If one's child is less than 3 years old, then a 2-door coupe/cab is not practical because of the inconvinience of getting the child in and out of the car. In this case, a 4-door sedan is necessary. After the child is 4 years old and can get in and out mostly by himself/herself, then it is fine. Most adults can get in and out with no problems, unless they are quite old.

Another thing to note is that cabriolets and roadsters with soft tops have poorer noise insulation. When you travel at high speeds on the NS highway, it will certainly be less comfortable than a hardtop. Will your family members be able to tolerate it?

No doubt, a soft-top car is a lifestyle and a compromise car. However, the times when you can enjoy a cool evening drive under the stars and early morning dawn drive when the sun is just breaking out makes it worthwhile.

If you have the chance to own a roadster in your lifetime, do it as well. A 2-seater car driving experience is different and must be experienced at least once in your lifetime. It does not need to be an expensive roadster. There are many affordable and good roadsters to own as long as you don't need to own the latest models.

I currently own a 2-door/4-seater cabriolet and a 4-door sedan. I am contemplating swapping the 4-door sedan to another cabriolet. My heart says YES, but my head says NO.

A 335 of course! Great to drive [as you know], looks great, and even has practical rear seats and plenty of room for baggage. What more do you need? I thought about getting a TT plus a small 4-door for my wife, but now I'm leaning towards getting a 335 and promising to drive her everywhere....seems like a better deal to me! And she hates driving in Singapore anyway.

How about the new 350Z revision, with a 315HP engine? Finally an engine to match its over engineered chassis.

I found the 335i coupe to be a great great car. Power in spades, at low revs even `more' than an M3. But it's too much like any other car, and I value especially Mixmaster's words - If you have the chance to own a roadster in your lifetime, do it as well.

I have never had the chance before, now is a crack open for me, so I'm trying to open up the chance to own one. I suspect that AhBeng is also in the same position.

And the 335i would be really a killer for anybody with 2 young children and 2 baby seats. That will necessitate an MPV. I spoke to a roadster salesperson yesterday and he gave me a few choices for Odysseys, bought at 120K selling at 60K around 2-3 years old. Marvellous choices, excellent price. Now, that's a good case for an MPV, almost fully depreciated in body value in just 3 years.

I like your idea to. Makes perfect sense.
Selfish car => for daily commute to work
SUV/MPV => for family

haha... sounds familiar man... my sentiments exactly...:lol2:

ahBeng... to me its all individual. after i sold of my sedan... i was living with a cabrio for my family of 2+2 for coming 2 yrs oredi!! i take the train/taxi to work most of the time coz its more convenient... the wife drives the car most of the time... even on weekend family outings... no problems... coz its a proper 2+2.

if u want tat kind of car... just be prepare for the inconveniences n hassles that comes along with the car. to me the BMW coupe/cabrio makes perfect sense... it has the proper room for 2 behind without compromising performance/drive. ( was choosing between the Saab/CLK/A4 ). if u are not prepare for noise - dun get a cabrio... simple...

i know of 2 guys having a 996 as a family car as well... that car definitely not meant for bringing ur mom n dad out behind... hahaha

drove the car 3 times oredi to KL n back without any problems... luv the drive n care free/versatile feeling of the cabrio.

if u dun want to own a coupe/cabrio now... when then?!!! when ur above 50? :lol2:

interesting thread.....I suppose if kids are past child-seat age then coupe/cab is definately possible, in fact it will be fun for the kids as well.

Say if you have 2 kids, age 2+ to 3 and the younger one still an infant requiring rear-facing car seat and needs to be attended to, it would be impossible to have the older kid in a forward facing car seat in the front passenger seat with front airbag, how do you guys manage? anyone have a way round this?

anyways, its good to know there are guys out there with family of 2 kids not going for MPV....:yummie:....i guess the alternatives are there its just whether one wants to take the conventional route or do some adapting....

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

Thanks to government tax structure changes, with an 2+ year Odyssey going for S$60K 2nd hand, there may be no need to compromise. Get a full blown MPV and a full blown roadster if that's your fancy.

It is VERY expensive to buy a compromise car for S$238K like the 335i and not be fully satisfied either end, make compromises for family and make compromises for yourself. You will itch in 1-2 years' time (like me) and stand to lose S$40-S$50K by selling a 1-2 year old compromise car. Which is such a painful act you cannot believe it. You don't even want to think about it.

Remember, no matter who you are, you are TOO POOR TO BUY ANYTHING CHEAP.
