Just want to ask every hiadee here. 2 doors like the 335 always look good n drive good as well. problem is my significant other half will never agree to replace a sedan with a coupe/cabriolet, for practical reasons.

How many of you own one car and its only a 2-door. How do your members in the family coup with it.

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

I am a bachelor, so no qualm about it. Only thing is that GF questions a lot if I am out alone....... need basis.

On a serious note, if you need to fetch more than 1 passenger regularly, forget about the coupes and the cabrios.

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

mine's a 4door...like what u said...its a case of dream versus practicality, not to mention the difference in insurance too :p
most of my frens would call a coupe driving guy a selfish driver but in my opinion, if u are paying for it....get something u like. u can't drive something everday that u hate rite? as a fellow car dreamer, i would say get the 2 door but as a family man, i have no choice but to say.....get a 4 door.
the practicality stuff will come knocking after u get your ride...trust me..eg, outing with wifey and parents, buying stuff that can't fit in your boot but your rear passenger seats especially at ikea...haha......anyway, its sucks being the rear passenger in a coupe

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

i had a integra before my E90 and boy, my other half miss the coupe! somehow, she prefer it to be just me and her, although technically 2 can fit the rear but many wouldnt like to squeeze.

"On a serious note, if you need to fetch more than 1 passenger regularly, forget about the coupes and the cabrios."

I *strongly* disagree. If you are giving somebody free transport, that somebody ought to be duly grateful and shut the *&% up if they feel slightly uncomfortable. If they don't like it they can take a bus.

In the specific case of the 335, the rear seats are very comfortable and anyone who complains about the slight inconvenience of getting in there is someone about whom you should seriously ask: do I really want to give free transport to someone who complains about being driven around in one of the best cars on the road?

Finally, a coupe has got to be safer for rear passengers, surrounded by nice hard steel. Tell your wife that, much as you would yourself prefer 4 doors, your overriding concern for the safety and well-being of your mother-in-law compels you to go to the additional expense of getting a 335. If she protests, tell her off severely for lacking filial piety.

Seriously, the inconvenience of a coupe [one with large rear seats like the 335] is trivial, and it's not the real reason why wives don't like these cars. The real reason is that they are unsettled by the image these cars project. People should deal with these issues and not talk about "inconvenience". The rear seats of an Audi TT really are inconvenient to anyone but a hobbit. The rear seats of a 335 are inconvenient to a professional basketball player, but not to anyone else.

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

Sorry, our friend Mr Beng asked for specific experiences. I had a coupe at one point, and hope soon to have another. When we transport friends, they sit in the back and are happy not to have to take a bus. When we transport my mother-in-law, with whom I am on excellent terms by the way :), my wife sits in the back and MIL sits in the front passenger seat. No complaints. Perhaps the fact that my previous car was a 2-seater might have something to do with this. :) Anyway, I do need to transport other people from time to time; as I am contemplating a new car, my wife very reasonably said that since I am paying, I can get whatever I like, but she would very much prefer 4 seats to 2. I can go along with that......

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

I used to hv just one car ( M3 ) for about 1yr until I found it's a little troublesome when a new family member arrived ( u know babyseat, then must be gentle etc )..Found an excuse and bought one cheap 4dr family SUV.

IMO, if u just have one rear passenger most of the time, then it's ok to hv a coupe or cabrio. Afterall, all u need to do is to fold the seat fwd and the passenger can come outta car quite easily. For a baby or toddler, it's a little trouble some coz u hv to do all the work.

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

i only have one car and its a 2 door. the rest of the family copes by driving their own cars

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

I was driven by a racing freak in the 335 on the weekend, for a really what seemed to me like a LOONG time, across the most twisty empty roads in the Bkt. Timah and west coast area, and I must say that it is an INCREDIBLE car and for an ONLY car for a small family, it FITS really well but not perfectly. The suspension is firm but controlled, doesn't crash on bad surfaces, and it's great even for infants.

However, if you go TripleM's route of getting another SUV/MPV, (like what I plan to do also) you should at least consider a more SELFISH performance car, say the Z4, Cayman, TT, SLK, and others akin. I am `almost' at the final decision stage now and have not wavered from this position - to get a big cheap old people carrier and a really selfish performance car.

I like your idea to. Makes perfect sense.
Selfish car => for daily commute to work
SUV/MPV => for family

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

If you drive a nice cab/coupe and need to haul ass once in a while, I don't think friends would turn down a car swap for the day :lol2:

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

What kind of cheap MPVs are u guys looking at? I'm thinking if I need to head down this route as well...

Cheers,
B

join me. the E46 M3 isn't really supposed to be a no-compromise car right? not really selfish enough. You know you want a Z4 coupe/Z8/ Z3 M roadster/Cayman/911/elise/exige/R8/SLK55 AMG.

I couldn't care less acually. Because of my limited financial circumstances, it would be a 2nd hand something with 5 years left. After I get it I'll just respray it, reupholster it and fit in brembos on the front for safety.

Yeah but I dont want to sell the M3 just because of that reason too hahahaha...

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

Fortunately, I got my 2-dr when I was in between girlfriends so no one could complain about anything. When I have to fetch my parents, they just comment that it's tough to get out from the back seat but nothing major. And then shortly I bought my car, I met my fiance (hopefully she loves me more than my car!).

And the amazing thing is that she loves 2-dr and has said that she can't envision herself buying a 4-dr sedan or MPV. So it looks like I am in trouble because when we start a family, we'll have two 2-dr cars! I guess a good problem to have lah ...

Thanks to all who responded so far, special mention to TripleM(aka BMW guru) and CaySman. Err BTW TripleM is SUV isnt that cheap though. :lol2:

Yeah actually my wife is using the E90 everyday as Schoolbus for my child, NTUC shopping carrier, MIL carrier, etc......and I take MRT ! :furious:

So we had a man-to-woman-to-MIL-to-child ahbeng talk over the weekend and how we can compromise. We dump the E90 and go for a mini-cooper-S or BMW coupe or etc? Or keep it and get another? Should we have an MPV+Coupe combo?

And it was a mistake:p . Now the discussion is slanting towards retaining the E90(partly bcos selling it now losses big time on value) and "Ok to consider a Coupe/Cabriolet":smack: . So maybe I should just STFU for now:laughlik:

I was not saying that the passengers are ungrateful, or they ought to be grateful. My point, in reference to ABD's post, was that some family members would have troubles getting in and out of the coupes and cabs. Think of the aunties and the uncles. They will appreciate a sedan or a MPV better than a coupe or cab. Not about whether they appreciate or take for granted, but whether climbing in and out of the door is truly a hassle for them. If you have to pick up few aunties for mahjong every other day, sure they will not complain, but how would you feel if one of them trip and fall on his or her face while getting out of the car?

That's true. Easy to get a swap, especially with friends who wanna fetch chicks...... at least it applies in my case. :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

Think about it another way. Sell the E90 get a 40K MPV second hand, use the additional cash to help finance the selfish car.

You do realise that the recent government cuts on the importation tax and also the road tax is a step towards us owning multiple cars for niche purposes too right? It may not have been the specific purpose of the legislation, but it sure seems so.
