Anyone can advise where to get BMW steering wheel with gear shifts at its side, and you can manually change gear with your fingers (like those in F1 racing)?

Hi galant1688 (modder of Dec 2004),

You can get the //M Steering Wheel + Paddleshift from PML as a part.
As for installation, there are a few places that you can get it fixed. If memory serves me right, 2 of the external workshop that does it would include:

- Sin Wee Chuan
- BVO

Installation would take approximately 1.5-2 hours.

You'll just need to get the steering wheel + paddles. The round airbag can be reused from your existing steering wheel. The cost of this part is in the proximity of $1,200 with an additional $120-150 for installation depending on the installers' labour charges. As far as I know, PML workshops will not install it due to it being a non-standard part for cars that come without it.

Regards,
Alvin.

Oh yah.. I forgot... :| We got around the same time! :)
Also, due to current EURO conversion rates, the prices may have been driven upwards too.

Thanks!.

an alternative to save money, if you do not need the far rims of the M3 steering wheel, is to buy the paddles only. since the paddles are designed to be retrofitted to any steering wheel by drilling it, you can do just that.

Hi ! Racebred.

Saw you driving along Bt Timah the other day and I was driving behind you with Angel Eye ON. Trying to greet you but failed :(

Can I clarify with you that my car come with normal steering wheel. You means that all I need to do is to purchase the Paddles only ?

All a long, my understanding that Peddles shift only fit with Fat M3 Steering wheel

hmm ya, i thot the sports edition comes with m3 steering wheel? Or is it different? So guess he juz needa add on the paddles ya? Isn't it?

Waaa waa...now getting F1 style leh..

Car must be way too fast for steptronic....woah..

Otto? Ready not? Beh tahan liaoz...

hello.

piggyboyz has done slightly the opposite, but the idea is still the same: he drilled his smg paddles on an M3 steering wheel and it works just fine.

remember the drilling is not a crude DIY, but something which the paddles are originally designed for. thats why there's a separate part number for the paddles and it's possible for you to buy it separately from the parts counter.

to get around all these trouble, you can also simply buy the m3 smg wheel and get it over and done with. but more expensive. try the fat grip of the m3 wheel first. you may really like it.

Shawn, on same principle, will this mod work on a M5 steering wheel? Thanks.

can we just do that??

erm, i'm confused...

so are the retrofitted paddles for show only or will they actually work? isn't SMG a clutchless manual system? can the paddles be paired with a steptronic without changing the entire transmission?

Of coz they work but don't expect them to be shifting as fast as the original SMG system and yes, SMG is a clutchless manual system.

The retrofited paddles and steptronic gearbox are running parallel, meaning u can use both as and when u wish to.

Okay, Piggy likes the feel of the M3 steering wheel but would like to incorporate the SMG paddles on it, hence the swap, cuz the SMG steering wheel is a bit lacking in thickness, as compared to the M3 steering wheel.

There are 2 different codes for the M3 steering wheel. I found out the hard way cuz when i ordered my coupe, i asked for the M3 steering wheel and they fitted it onto my car. Then I joined BMW.SG and found out about the paddles and when I had a look at my M3 steering wheel, it doesn't have the holes at the back for the paddles. In the end, I had to swap my M3 steering for another M3 steering wheel with paddles. Damn laychey!

Remember it does nothing in terms of performance, but its for fun sake, where u can change gears with both your hands still on the steering wheel!

oic, that's a pretty neat mod. :) would that work with a manual transmission? like instead of using the gear shift, i use paddles in unison with my clutch paddle?

i wonder Z4 can or not... me still waiting for tanzy to install his, cause he mentioned he doing it... but he very busy boy now leh!!!

geoff....Z4 of course k...get SMG lor... heehee happy new yr bro!!

tanzy's thinking of that mod? hmm... why didn't he just get the SMG in the first place??

actually... i was wondering if it's feasible and legal to transplant the SMG II from the M3 into the Z4...
