To be safe, definitely 0-40.pReTeNd3r;820875 said:So what's the best recommended oil? 5W40? 0W30? Today at Ntuc xtra, I say shell helix ultra selling at $59.90 at 4L. I was tempted to buy...

In mass mkt, i only know Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5-30.
There is a balance btw efficient & protection. IMHO, the thicker the oil is an old skool thought.douggie;820985 said:Yes. With the high temperature of SG weather + no cold winters + BMW high operating temp, I think the thicker the oil the better.

I think Esso Petrol station has it. It is not easy to find.turbocharged;821034 said:Where do you buy that locally?

Mobil 1 (European Car Formula) 0w-40: HTHS 3.8
Mobil 1 ESP Formula 5w-30: HTHS 3.6
If u look at HTHS data for both oil, 5w-30 does not perform substantially worse off than 0w-40.
Agreed....douggie;821187 said:But anyway, the choice of oil is individual preference. Unless you go on track or redline for extended periods, any oil will do. Most drivers don't even bother about what goes into their cars. And if you change cars every three to five years, you will not be able to see any differences in terms of engine protection.

My 8 yr old M54 uses 0-40 only le even though 1L oil loss around 7k - 8k km. Anyway, that's the point i m changing oil.wt_know;821230 said:i will still use ?W-40 or max ?W-50 if engine eats oil heavily
even car is 5 years old ... we drive like mickey mouse the engine is not being bashed up everyday unlike 2ton lorry dragging with black smoke coming out ...
Have been using X-Rev 0W-30 since 1st oil change for my F10 523i .. no problem so far after 1 1/2 yrs .. no need oil top up, no sure if due to anti-friction treatment .. brought oil to PML for servicing... maybe thinner oil, so can smoke sonata taxi at red lightst8800;820932 said:0w-30 is confirm better for newer conti engine.
