Re: Z4 Coupe

I found this Z4 Coupe to be possibly the best driving car BMW makes today. The list price is at S$209K which in my opinion is a FAIR price but it is not subject to super big negotiation because it is a niche model.

I agonized over it and decided to spend S$30K more on a Cayman. Don't get me wrong, the Z4 out HP, out Torque and out speed the Cayman in a straight line, but the sound of the Z4 coupe is not as exciting, and the Z4 Coupe noticeably understeers a little bit on medium speed corners - ie the Cayman handles better - it is neutral while the Z4 is default understeer behaviour. The Z4 3.0 Si coupe does allow trail braking where the Cayman allows LESS trail braking, if you trail brake too much in the Cayman you will feel the rear end slide a bit.

The engine in the Z4 SI coupe is superior to the Porsche flat6 2.7 in every way save sound. Low end mid end the BMW aces it, though high end the Cayman 2.7 seems to pull better while the Z4 Coupe 3.0 seems a little flat ....

On a more academic note (because you'll never usually notice it until your engine grinds itself to death) the Cayman has dry sump lubrication where the Z4 uses the more conventional wet sump. Theoretically the Cayman will be more suited for the track on super sticky tyres (think Michelin Cup, or more than 1G type sustained cornering).

The Cayman comes with PS2 or CSC3, where the Z4 the moment it comes you have to chuck away the runflats replace with some other tyre.

The Cayman is a substantially lighter car on paper, and you can feel it. The cockpit of the Z4 Coupe is slightly boring, the Cayman even in base spec looks a little more interesting and special. The plastics are nicer on the Cayman. The Cayman has more luggage space (2 golf bag no problem) where the Z4 has less. The interior of the Cayman is bigger than the Z4 by quite a lot in the subjective sense.

Exterior - the Z4 coupe is full of drama, and it aces the Cayman.

So, if you want the driving experience, go for the Cayman, everything else the Z4 Coupe aces it. Even WOW factor, the Z4 Coupe is more WOW except for the Porsche badge.

Racing fans - you'd probably feel better with the Z4 Coupe. BMW supplies the Z4 Coupe in THEORY to customers (though their list is very very short compared to Porsche's 997 Cup) but Porsche refuses to make any racing Caymans. And the Z4 Coupes under some customer teams are doing really really well compared to the 997 Cup, but maybe not the 997 GT3 RSR. New races like dubai Autodrome etc, all won by the Z4 Coupe R.

Re: Z4 Coupe

When choosing between a 335 and the non-S Cayman, I preferred everything about the Cayman except [a] the price and the torque. The Cayman's torque was fine, don't get me wrong, but the 335 felt like it had about twice as much. As far as the Z4 is concerned, its main advantage is in the looks department. As always, it all depends on your priorities.

The Z4 3.0SI NA coupe, Z4 M Coupe and Cayman 2.7 and 3.4 are all about just sufficient torque at the low end, and about sustained breath and pull all the way to 6500-7200 and beyond for the Z4M-coupe.

Totally different for the 335i forced aspiration fills in all the blanks all the way to 6000rpm (actually 4000) but runs out of breath otherwise. Like a typical American V8 (not the Chevy Corvette small block).

The philosophy behind the engine and car between the Cayman and Z4 Coupe are totally different from the 335i, where the small coupes are for you to rev it to hell just for fun, where the 335 emphasizes more on easy power, smooth waves of torques.

This is exactly the fundamental difference between the M3 and 335. The philosophies are totally different even though the horsepower figures are same to a point. The M3 is for rev it to hell pleasure, to 7500, where the 335 runs outta steam at 6000. The additional 1500rpm here is important at high gear as it takes relatively long to go from 6000 to 7500. The pleasure here is palpable.

The end result may be similar, but the journey there sure is different!

Re: Z4 Coupe

Thanks all for the feedback.

I have test drive the Coupe the other day, felt the car has little too much power for Singapore road, thus, prompting me look at 2.5. While I was at the PML show room, I have also seen the E92 325, looks very nice. But didn't have time take the test drive.

Does anyone have test drive both Z4 2.5 and 325? How does the two compare in terms of performance?

Thanks in advance.

sorry, you mean there's a 2.5L Z4 Coupe? Thought all Z4 coupe was either Z4M and Z4 3.0SI

I felt that the 325 coupe 4 seater needs more power to increase excitement when driving the car. It is not sufficiently exciting in the drive and balance department, prompting me to subconsciously want more power than what it can give. Driving in it is little different from driving in a E90 325 sedan. The autotrans is a dream though. It's wonderful.

Re: Z4 Coupe

Interesting.... I thought 325 sedan is the same as 325 coupe apart from the looks, could you explain a bit more in details? As I am evaluating 325 or Z4 2.5. Tks.

Hi HWDQ,

Z4 2.5 not available as coupe, only as roadster.

325 coupe is supposed to be tuned differently from 325 sedan. More sporty set-up, especially with the sports suspension. But agree with caySman, honestly I couldn't tell the difference between the 2.

The 2.5L feels inadequate on the the new E90/92 because the E90/92 is so well built and insulated compared to the E46 that you do not feel the rush (in terms of drama, road and wind noise, twitching of the car etc). Even in the 335, it feels fast but not dramatic.

The Z4 2.5 si actually feels adequately fast for S'pore roads. 6.9s 0-100 is fast enough for most people. You feel the speed more because you're almost sitting on the rear wheels, and the soft top does not insulate noise as well. It's not good for >160 kmh cos too noisy and twitchy.

Rented a Z4 3.0si in Germany and drove on Autobahn at 200 kmh, too much drama compared to the other BMW models. But around curvy mountain roads, no contest - will surely put a smile on your face.

Actually, as a matter of fact, I just ordered a Z4 2.5si... taking the keys on Wed. Can't wait... after 2.5 years (no pun intended) of waiting and looking, waiting and looking...

Re: Z4 Coupe

Congrats on the Z4 2.5si purchase!

Have to agree on the feeling of speed in the 335i... just not enough drama... *thinking of removing sound insulation*... hahaha!

Thanks....

I guess BMW is trying to distinguish the 335i vs M3 by the way it delivers its power. If the 335i has so much drama and excitement, why would anyone realistically want to pay another 100k more for the M3?

5.5sec vs 4.8sec IMHO is academic. The 335i is more of a cruiser, almost like a GT.
You must be enjoying it!

Anyhow, Z4 2.5 vs E92 325i is a very different comparison. Roadster vs Coupe, 2 seats vs 4. For me, the choice was to own a roadster once in my life... at least b4 the kids + maid + dog + bicycles etc etc etc come into play.

Re: Z4 Coupe

Thanx. Yup, definately exciting times... can't wait for next Wednesday. And I'm going for the BMW family drive up to M'sia this weekend from Sat to Tues with my friend's BMW.

I chose Black ext with Pearl Grey int. Very nice contrast. Pearl Grey if I'm not wrong is only available on the Z4. You can view it at PML Alexandra in the Z4 coupe. Although that car has Silver ext, so the contrast to as great
