I heard the same too but it's gonna cost about $12000 if not more.
Wait a bit, change to the new Valvetronic engine, only $3000 more and you get to have a spare engine.

Auto..i think you got to consider a tranny swap.

The workshop that helps you do the engine swap will keep the engine for you until you are ready to put the original engine back.

I don't know about the 3 series but the Z4 uses the same ZF HP 19 auto gearbox for all 3 engine displacement.

Also, you can trade in the auto box for a brand new manual transmission. Just pay a bit more for labour cost. Probably the best mod out there.
