wipers shuddering

Hi bros, i find this thing very annoying. whenever it rains, whether drizzling, showering or heavy rain, and the wipers need to be used either in the intermittent mode or continuously, they start to shudder after more than 10 sweeps. are all bimmers the same? and how to resolve this problem?

the PML service supervisor told me that i have to use the wiper liquid that PML provides and spray it whenever i switch on the wipers - even when it is raining! i just can't accept that. all my previous cars (japanese makes) do not have this problem.

my ride is the E46 FL.

Re: wipers shuddering

Been discussed before.

Either use the wiper wash fluid (one bottle enough for a few tankful!), or change to silicone wipers.
I'm using this Twister brand, just got the refill, and put it into the existing Bosch holder, all works well.

It's not the same for all bimmers. I believe other marques can experience the same thing.

Couple of things that can contribute to the problems:
1. The wiper blade itself ( check if it's loose or cracked or hardened )
2. Do u use those window cleaner liquid sprays? Sometimes this can also be attributed to the problem.

I have had my car for 1.5 yrs and have never encountered that problem. Occasionally I use the wiper liquid from the car but not entirely sure if that really helps preserve the wiper blades..

Re: wipers shuddering

I don't use anything and have never encountered this problem at all. I just wipe windshield everyday with a wet cloth.

Re: wipers shuddering

Hi! Usually this problem occurs if the windscreen is coated with something. Don't use rain-X or some washing dtergents that contain wax ( wash and wax formulations) or at some commercial carwashes that apply wax when car is being washed. This layer creates the juddering. Hope this helps.
Cheers

Next time you wash your car, just use newspaper to dry the windscreen. It should stop the shuddering.

That's about right... usually the windscreen is coated with some form of wax that causes the juddering! Best is to use some soap detergent to wash the windscreen again, so that it'll break up and wash away the layer of wax or chemical that is causing the juddering and wipe it down with newspaper.

As for your wipers, its better to get them checked, cleaned or replaced, since they would have a layer of wax buildup on it.

Cheers!

Few things to check:
1. Wiper Blade - Is it worn?
2. Wiper Arm - Is it deformed?
3. Windscreen - Any non-recommended coating? Any stone-chip?

If your car is still under warranty, get it fixed early.
Let the guys know does it happen all the times or only sometimes?
Also, where are the areas you frequent (industrial, etc...)? Because I heard in some industrial areas, a coat of the air pollutants on the windscreen or the wiper blade may cause this juddering.
A good service advisor should be able to advise you how to maintain it.

If all things fail, maybe your wipers are just cold and shivering... :lol2:

Hope these helps.
Share with us your attempts, whether it works or not, ok?

Cheers!

Re: wipers shuddering

Besides problems with the wiper blades and windscreen as discussed, I wonder if excess contact pressure of the blades on the windscreen can contribute to the judders.
I notice that the pressure of the wipers on the windscreen is quite high as the springs in the wiper arm is quite strong and stiff.

Errr..not sure bro. So far only tried Straits Times..kekeke. Honestly, if your wipers are giving you the shuddering problem, just use a newspaper to dry your windscreen the next time you wash your car. It eliminates the problem without costing you a single cent..well..maybe just the cost of buying the papers. =)

Its usually the wipers and the "texture" of the windscreen that causes the juddering...

Re: wipers shuddering

i use to have this problem also, i manage to reduce the shuddering by applying rubber conditioner from PML.
it also works well for other rubber parts for our car, like door seal, windows seal.

good luck.

Re: wipers shuddering

thanks for all the suggestions bros. but it's still happening. i have never used any chemicals on the glass and the blades have been replaced too. usually the first few wipes are smooth, but as it continues, it starts to judder. sigh!

Re: wipers shuddering

Its a layer of transparent crap on the glass thats making your wiper shudder.. run a layer of water to see you have any blurry effect on the windscreen looking from inside the cabin..

Re: wipers shuddering

Actually the trick I learnt from my car is very simple, no need to change wipers prematurely. Whenever it shutters, just remove them, turn 180 deg and replace, meaning the rubber strip facing up now face down, and vice versa. It should work sometime until it shutter again. I think its more due to the rubber of the wiper design, somehow its affected after sometime and exposure to the elements. Try it, hope u understand wat I mean, otherwise I can demo.

Re: wipers shuddering

Or..you could just use a car liquid shampoo. Dab some in between ur thumb and index finger and run it along the blades. That should werk.
