Warming Up

 Guys,

Just came across in the manual (E90) that its not advisable to warm up the engine while at standstil and its advised in the manual that moving off immediately at slow speeds is the way to go....

Have been warming up by letting the engine idle for about 3mins before moving off in the morning and this idea of immdiately moving off just doesnt bode well with me... even if recommended in the owners manual....

Advise frm the bros here pls.....

Cheers

Re: Warming Up

i usually just start the engine and drive off.. and let the slow drive warm up.. cuz you'll be slowly crawling out of the cp anyways.. tt warm up i find is better.. less idle..

i think the new cooling system has something to do with this.. dun quote me.. can someone more knowledgeable shed more light...

Re: Warming Up

i also just drive off. i got no 3 mins to spare.

3 mins can post a lot of shit

Re: Warming Up

Not wrong. Best for auto cars. It actually warms up faster in slow move off and after a while you find the engine responds better.

Re: Warming Up

yup, been firing it up and drive, albeit slowly in the initial, without idling

Re: Warming Up

Well if you don't warm up, a few more atoms will shear off from your cylinder lining if you move off .... This is proven lah, the M3 E46 actually don't even allow high rev before warming up, proof that warm up is important.

If you warm up, you spend a couple of minutes lookin' stupid, all the time your cat converter slowly warming up, all the time before the cat warm up it's not working, and emissions are great.

So, it's a choice between you warming up the car slowly while screwing the environment, or you screwing up the engine a little while protecting the environment.

Pick one and tell us what your choice is.

Hi Caysman,

So you are saying that you still subscribe to the idea that warming up in standstill mode is still theway to go?

Re: Warming Up

Honestly, for me...i let the engine run abt 2 mins before i move off all the time. After 2 mins, i switch on the aircon and move off. This has been my habit for the last 5 years. I also drive below 4k rpm as the engine gradually gets up to temp and vary accordingly. Dont know abt u guys but thats me.

me? I go straightaway. In my bloody farkin' odyssey, I go before the 6 beeps finish.

On my previous bloody german cars, if I go before the power on self test, sometimes I will get the car to start up in SAFE LIMP HOME MODE. Frustrating bloody bosch electronics. So I have to wait 5-6 seconds for POST to finish then I can go.

I am saying that, I believe, that there is a small saving on wear and tear on the engine if you wait.

BUT IN THESE DAYS, FEW YEARS YOU EXPORT THE CAR, SO WTF? Just screw it and go.

And if you want to keep the car for 25 years, for example, you should and can rebuild the engine every 7 years anyway, so WTF?

Re: Warming Up

Yep yep... I still cant bring myself to drive off immediately on a cold start in the morning at least idle for a min at least.... Just surprise that the manual actually advocates driving off immediately..
