Hi Redas,

Welcome to the forums!!! :wavey:

You couldn't have posted at a much better time, why not bring your car down to the meetup this sunday to have it checked out by our fellow BMW enthusiasts? They could probably give you a clear and concise answer to the problem.

It sounds like a problem of your rear axle mounting... how old is the car? My family ex-E46 had this problem when it was around 4+ years old. Cost quite a bit to solve... everytime slow down there will be a soft "clunk" sound.

Not irritating to the ears, but quite sian to hear when slowing down.

Cheers!

Hi Ryan

so what exactly do you need to do to fix that sound + what is the actual problem ??

and what is the cost ??

thanks

Rear axle mounting is worn out.

Reasons given to me by mechanic was that, due to SG's drive-stop scenarios, it wears out significantly quicker than in cars in germany whereby distances are expressways-based.

Weather conditions and other enviromental variables do play a part as well..

Cost was about.. slightly less than a grand? or may be more...due to the fact that they have to drop the subframe (or part of the chasis) to get at it. This workshop is one of the usual BMW suspects, but they have always been frank and truthful. Problem was solved after that...

but best to get it driven and diagnosed by a couple of ears before proceeding on to repair work.

The E46 was a 99' build.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for your reply and help. My car is a month to 3 years old. The 'clunk' sound comes on and off. Lately it seems to have gone but i am not so hopeful its gone forever. Do u think it would be wise to get an outside mechanic to check and with the results go straight to PML to repair? Sounds troublesome but will this save me some dough...also i may be able to claim under warranty? possible?

Pardon me i missed the meetup...will be great to be at the next one.

thanks again...

You can check out the problem at the usual suspect workshops outside PML. :) In no following order... Juzz4Cars, BVO, Riverview..

I had my car checked out by John at Juzz4cars. Details of their workshops can be found above in the workshops link.

Good luck and i hope you problem gets solved soon.

Free consultations are by any outside workshops.. they will all tell you "no obligation" anyway.... it's just that you may get pressured to immediately do the job right away.

Just keep to your cold emotions and prepare to keep saying no to the beautiful sweet thing at PML...so you won't burn your cash ;) It's too easy to give in to emotions. ahahahah.
