To all experienced bros/sis,

I would like to find out what would be the main things to check/look out for when getting a used E90 318i that has more than 100km mileage on them. The engine bay area and bottom are totally clean with no oil spills or leaks from what I can see. Thanks in advance!

I guess you need to get ready $10k and this is a conservative figure. It also depends on whether are you an anal person. If you are, then maybe you need more. If buying price is cheap (depreciation is low), you can consider if you want to drive to scrape.

bro how come your points so high when your post is only 34? How did you manage to do it?

He member since 2003 eh bro. Experience points very high i think.

Anyway, when people say e90 need 10k, is really true. Now i understand why most of them have so many transfer count.
Second owner pay 7-8k alr will fed up and sell off, third owner will throw in abit more to 10k. Better find one with 4 or 5 owners, surely nothing left to fix by then.
Else, water, oil, valve seals, gearbox, alternators, starter motors, radiator, pumps and so on. Good luck hunting :)

Above 100k km, better put aside some $$.

If its from dealer, everything will sure look clean and good.

Cheeeeerrrs.

Check the suspension, rotors, gearbox and rear axle oil leak...

Re: Things to look out for in a >100km used E90 318i

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all your replies!

Here's some more info on the E90s I've been looking at:
- 318i Oct 2009 116K km (going to arrange test drive) [Ah Yang, sorry it was a typo, I left out the "K". :)]
- 323i Dec 2008 79K km (sighted some oil leaks after test drive)
The 318i looks in a much better condition than the 323i with an immaculate engine bay.

So far, from what I've gathered, the following are the main things to check:
- service record
- gearbox
- solenoid
- water pump
- suspension
- rotors
- ATF
- engine oil leaks
- rear axle oil leaks
Anything else I may have missed?

Jetpilot, thanks for your sharing. I intend to set aside about S$10K for "just in case" fixes.
Have been in this forum for a very long time but MIA for a while due to various reasons. :)

The 318i is a consignment from a direct seller. Immaculate interior and engine bay. The dealer didn't do anything to it.

Now i know why your nick is Assassin... those various reasons why u MIA.

Re: Things to look out for in a >100km used E90 318i

the best time is to ask the seller if he mind letting you send the car to a workshop (site sponsor) for an evaluation / QC check at your cost.

should cost you $80-90 bucks only.

i had mine checked previously and the valvetronic motor and some o ring was found to be due for replacement. the dealer and I split the cost 50/50 to have it changed. saved around 300+

no QC, no buy.

116K km in 3.5yrs is quite high mileage and problem tend to surface around this time.

Re: Things to look out for in a >100km used E90 318i

I would suggest to go for the 323i instead of the 318i.
I seldom hear ppl complaining about inline 6 with oil leaks. Most of the oil leaks issues come from the inline 4. Correct me if I am wrong, guys?

By the way, 10k is just a very conservative amount. It maybe more. If anything to happen, I hope your car get into trouble within the first 6 mths and the dealer will have to take care of the replacement part for you.

Now I start to think whether is it still worth it for dealer to sell BMW cars. hahahahha...

You looked under the oil filter housing of the 318i ? That part not easy to clean off the leaked oil ....

Re: Things to look out for in a >100km used E90 318i

Wear and tear not covered under 6 mth lemon law...

I used to think low milege was good. But thats bad because it means u'll be the one replacing alot of parts down the road. High milege if owner took care of it well and parts changed regularly, just ask for a lower price and drive it without fuss :)
