Subwoofer's performance

Hi Guys,

I am trying 2 different subs, and the effect is quite different.

1st sub has RMS of 100 (Rainbow)
- the volume is okay
- the quality is good in the sense that it is very mellow, and the 1 beat per bar bass sounds very good. not very punchy, and for certain music it is good.
- the very very low note seems a bit more rigid than the higher pitched bass
- the fast beat bass is not so good

2nd sub has RMS 200 (Blaupunkt)
- volume is okay
- much punchier and tighter, but less mellow. each beat is hit pretty hard (not to my liking)
- also rigid for lower bass note
- handle faster beat better

Mine is on a free-air set up with the amp channel a bridged 278 rms into the woofer.

Questions:
1) Is it possible for the sub to be punchier for some music, and less so for others?
2) The lower notes...would it be improved with more power from amp, or changing woofer?
3) The faster beat bass...is that a problem of amps or sub? (Not a huge problem for me as I seldom listen to very fast song).
4) What's the impact of larger size sub, ie 12 inch as compare to 10inch? If everything is the same, what will be the outcome to the sound?

Do share knowledge...
thanks...
