Stupid Question?

Hi All,

May I ask a stupid question. cos i never have an answer.

During our car lessons, we are told to press the handbrake knob before pulling up the handbrake.

In pratical life, I just simply pull the handbrake. as a result, there is a "kreeek" sound.

I also hear ppl's "kreek " sound when they pull their handbrake.

Some mechanic says its ok. Some say it will spoil your handbrakes gear.

What is what? Who is correct?

Hope their are some engineers here to enlighten me.

Cheers!

Re: Stupid Question?

That was what I was told. I just depress the button when pulling the handbrake up. You can never be too safe.

I do it beocs I don't like the sound.

Re: Stupid Question?

I was told by few mechanics before it is advisable to not have the "kreeek' sound so shld press the knob, as to what is potentially as risk of being damaged I dont know. Also am told sometimes its better to release D mode when stationary, ie put to N mode, else the car is wanting to move forward but is held back by yr foot/hand brake. Often we also hear some "grrreeek" sound, apparently not so good for the auto gearbox but how true it is I didnt verify

Hi Brudders..

One mechanic told me that if you pressed the knob, you tend to pull it potentially higher. If you did not, it will lock easily. When u pull higher, the greater the locking, but faster the wear and tear.

It seems everybody press, the knob, so i guess i better be kiasu.

Thanks!

Speaking of which, what is Neutral for anyway?

N mode is probably equivalent to 'free-gear' in manual cars right, i think. One mechanic told me if say u are gonna stay stationary at a traffic light which just turned green, u could pull the hand break and shift to N mode...that way its suppose to be less taxing on the gearbox. make sense?

Re: Stupid Question?

Wat I learned was when pulling handbrake, use the knob coz otherwise, the teeth will wear out in time to come. As for Neutral, this has been discussed before. Not advisable to put to N at the traffic lites coz will wear off some solenoids. Better to leave in D coz autocars made to deal with that. There shd also be no concern abt brake wear juz coz car is at P at the lites and u use the brakes to keep the car stationary.

I see N as a temp device coz imagine if the car has no N and u shift from D to R straightaway a bit scary lah.

That is right...
Krek sound is fine.

In fact i read from some article that when u park ur car and pull handbrake, bout 3 kreks are enough to lock it...if u do need more than 3 kreks then it's time to hv the brake checked.

Re: Stupid Question?

hi guys,

neutral could also be used for towing, or when the car needs to be manually pushed, etc.

cheers,
saify.

Re: Stupid Question?

Neutral is used for towing or pushing the car, but with your car you might have to check your manual cause if there is a flat battery, u can't engage neutral.
