Steering vibration problem

hello to all the experts out there .....

Need anyone who can help share similar experience with steering vibration . I have upgraded my stock rims to a brand new set of M5 replica 19inch rims and tire recently. However, after the mod i can feel steering vibrates at around 100-110 kmh. Despite travelling back and forth to do balancing, high speed balancing the problem persist.

I was suspecting it was the replica rims and therefore i have no choice but to trade in for a set of Breyton flame original rim to once for all settle the problem. Was very excited as the rims was super light(around 8.5kg) but was short lived. Vibration is still there at around 100 to 120 kmh. Looks like it has nothing to do with the rims.

Can someone share some light here ? Totally lost..... seems like there are some other mech problem and i hope it is not something major. Will be heading to workshop soon. Help ....

Re: Steering vibration problem

are u sure breyton flame in 19 is 8.5kg?

Anyway, I read alot about this kind of issues n most say its a balancing problem, either wheel itself(all 4s) or high-speed(front). WHy dont u go to another reputable shop and rebalance again. Think it only cost $30 to do HSB....like a special.

Re: Steering vibration problem

Hi Ken, any spacer added? Any such problem when on your stock rims? Why not you put back your stock rims to try it out.

Re: Steering vibration problem

Thanks guys.... stock rim already trade in and is gone. and no problem at first . Already did HSB on the replica and problem still persist. Oh btw the breyton rims is light and around 8.5kg.

Re: Steering vibration problem

your wheels are out of alignment. it gets magnified when going at high speed. go get your wheels aligned and the vibration should disappear.

did you notice any uneven wear on your previous set of tyres? before you changed your rims?

Re: Steering vibration problem

there is no uneven wear on my previous tires and the car does not skew left or right when cruising . Anyway thanks for all the suggestion, i will send to the workshop and check. thks

Re: Steering vibration problem

did not say your steering is out of alignment.

it might be your wheel alignment that is out - check the toe-in / toe-out.

send it to a wheel or tyre specialist, not the workshop. somewhere where they can check your wheel alignment.

Re: Steering vibration problem

Hi Ken,
The centre bore for ori e60 rims are 72.5mm , some replica rims came with 74mm , check it out first before you do whatever balancing .

Cheers

Re: Steering vibration problem

not too long ago someone mention to me its possible that the rim may not be HUB-CENTRIC. WTF does that mean?

Most stock wheels are manufactured to fit the wheel hub in mind, hence hub centric in nature. The mounting pad on the wheel fits the diameter of the hub exactly.

Some after-market off-the-shelves wheels have a mounting pad to fit the bolts, but the wheel hub diameter is bigger than the hub itself. In cases like these, the tyre shop must fabricate a wheel hub adaptor to fill in the gap.

BTW, I will be damn impressed if 19" Breyton Flame is really 8.5 kg. What's the width?

Beng - notice the speed that the steering is vibrating? 100 - 120 km/h?

Re: Steering vibration problem

Hi all,

I experienced the same problem. Did wheel alignment 6000 Km ago while on 18 inches rims. Changed to 20 inches recently and the vibration is felt starting from as low as 90kmph to 110 kmph. Did high speed balancing, but did not resolved the problem.

I wonder if wheel alignment for changing to 20 inches rims, will solve the problem. I had wheel hub spacer for this set of rims, to fit the e60 bore. I forgot to check if the aluminum hub spacer is damaged.

sighhh... itchy backside, should have just stayed with 18 inche set up.

Regards,

Re: Steering vibration problem

it may not due to quality of the wheel.
Could be the fitting spec is not correct and installation workmanship.
just go back to the shop ask to solve the problem is thier responsibilty to fix it and deliver to you without this kind of problem
I  dislike this irresponsible or unethical business vendor
just MHO

Re: Steering vibration problem

hi, just my two cents words. Sometimes it might not be the rimsut it's the conicity of the tyres. Despite the HSB,mounting of the tyres is important too. example the red and white dot which is the symbol of high and low conicity level of the tyres. Many of us thought that tyres are 100% round, but that is not true thou.

Cheers

Re: Steering vibration problem

Hi..... I would like to share with you my latest findings on the vibrations problem after i upgraded my 525iA E60 stock rims to 19inch staggered. I sent to 2 workshop and the first one found nothing, control arms, steering arms etc found to be alright and the 2nd workshop said it is confirmed to be my shock absorbers already soften and need to be replaced. My car at >110km/h is unstable. Guess he is right since my ride is already 4 years old. Hope this is the last thing i need to change.

Need some advice should i just replace them with the original or OEM absorber which costs me around $750 or any bro got good suggestions ? Appreicate ...

Re: Steering vibration problem

where did you align your car? tyres may be a problem. what tyre r u running?

Re: Steering vibration problem

Tom , when i upgraded my rims and tires i did not check alignment, so far did high speed balancing. I m using 19inch Breyton and tires is Falken 452. Thks

Re: Steering vibration problem

well, steering vibration in most cases caused by tyres and the rims. why not try changing to a better tyres like Michelins/ Contis/ Bridgestone/ Pirellis...?

i had previous experience with Falken on another ride, had vibration that can never be solved until i swap out another set 2 yrs later. imagine i drove my car with steering vibration for 2 yrs?!!!!!

since your tyres are still new, they might fetch better value. think about it.

PS: i am running on Michelin PS2 19" with BBS LM-R. Last heard Breyton rims are made in China/ Taiwan? Japanese made rims also very reliable...

Re: Steering vibration problem

Tom ,

Thanks for the advice. My Breyton rims are made in Germany as i have checked before i purchased. Ya tires could be the next suspects since i have changed 2 sets of new rims, checked all linkages and no problem found. Sigh ..... it is really sad with this situation. Appreciate your inputs.

Re: Steering vibration problem

Are you certain that the vibrations came on after rim change on?

I had steering vibrations when travelling above 100km/hr before. You could also see the passenger seat vibrate quite strongly. Some vibration could already be felt even when car is stationary.

I had my engine and gearbox mountings replaced and I must say its a whole lot better now compared to before.

:)
