So disappointed with build quality E60

:( Hi guys, I had to send my June05 E60 523i to PML on Monday cos my engine started to sound like a diesel (rattling noise) and worse, I could feel engine shudder in my car while parking and idling. SA says it's a known issue but is still covered by BMW warranty. This is my third BMW that I have owned and this incident is making me seriously think of switching to other marques... will keep u posted when I get my car back.

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

lol did they say it was the cam timing advancer wearing out? It will wear out every 2-3 years. There is nothing you can do. And the procedure is expensive and labour consuming also. When not under warranty you prepare to shell out 4 figure sum. Changing to Mercedes also same issue, I really wonder why the Germans design stuff like this for their mainstream engines.

It does not cause any big issue, we had a Mercedes 230.6 with this issue for 10 years... only noise. In the 230.6 it adds character to the car - people think it's a diesel.... can't say that for your E60 though.

Bro, any difference in price if get done outside stealership?

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

Really don't know, but it cam timing advancer requires the removal of the engine top.

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

Ouch! Even from the way that sounds, it's gotta cost!

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

Actually a LOT of people have this stupid issue, especially on Merc's old 4 cyl DOHC and 3 valve SOHC V6, but they don't even notice the sound. Once you are attuned to the sound, you can't stop hearing it even in your sleep.

I'm not saying that this is Silversurfer's issue though... just a guess.

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

do you mean the timing chain? so easy to replace, cant beleive its 4k, rip off

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

Quick update, just collected my 320i :lol2: courtesy car today. Heard that I will possibly get my car back next week. They had to remove the engine block, flush it and replace some parts. :yikess:

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

god damn....

a whole rebuild ????

shit the PML guys gotta confer with the merc guys ....

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

Just got my car back today (sent it in on 14Jan). So far so good but a piece of advise from the SA is to change engine oil more frequently than what the Service Interval OBC indicates.

I suppose yr car ran as new now? I change engine oil every 10 to 15Kkm, good enough? Hope this don't happen man coz warranty over liao.

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

Any bros here can advise if we should send the car in earlier for the first servicing? My mileage is currently slightly more than 6K km, OBC says to go in another 4,900 km.

Thanks!

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

for the first 10k click, if you got extra cash, always advisable to change faster. not necessarily recomended; it's just simply being kiasee..

my advice would be to hard run-in your last couple of kms, then switch to fully synth all the way. motul is das bomb!

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

Hmmm My mileage is 6200km and my OBC still states another 11K km before going in for my first servicing. I started redlining the car when my mileage hit 3K plus km. I tot BMWs no need any run in???

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

New delivery E60s are showing 10000Km for Oil service. Normally i have been changing the oil after 1st 5000Km to be safe. i do not think it makes sense to run on the first fill oil for 20,000 km. Mobil 1 0w-30 or Castrol equivalent is good enough. remember to replce the oil filter at the same time.

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

desertfox is smart changing oil at 5k, but his oil choice not so smart

all this has been covered before. For me, from new, i would change after 1k, thats just me. then at 5k, then every 10k after that.

running in is for grandma.

Re: So disappointed with build quality E60

so far iddint get any problems with the oils I use ,but then again i do not race or redline my car engines either. I guess it depends largely on usage and driving habits
